Gage gives the logic and data behind his conclusion that vehicle fuel efficiency can be improved 50% by adding 1 oz acetone per gallon and tricking the car's computer into detecting an excess of oxygen so it richens up the mixture. (PESWiki July 19, 2008)
''On around July 23, 2008, a New Energy Congress Advisor urged strong caution regarding modifying the vehicle as recommended here. He said that part of the reason acetone increases mileage is because it pulls the water out of the gasoline, and delivers it for combustion and increased fuel catalyzing. Once the water is pulled out of the gasoline, then the improvement initially seen from acetone will diminish, unless the proper ratio of water is added to the fuel along with the acetone, and these ratios can be tricky to determine -- not something the lay person is likely to be able to do. He does not believe the "50%" figure claimed here.

"1st test of my T-bird since modifications stated at Article:Truth About Acetone and Ethanol in downtown, stop and go metro driving. Burnt an entire tank to get a good overall idea of mpg. Before modifications and addition
of acetone, it used to get 10mpg. Typical of a V8 in metro. Test I just completed shows 14mpg. So a 40% increase.
True city driving is not metro, more like suburb with SOME stop and go. This car is rated at 15mpg city. I would guess that sort of driving would yeild somewhere 'between' the 40% increase of metro and the 100% increase of hwy."

I ran across a patent application that involves using almost 100% acetone as a fuel and claims a great increase in mpg. Didn't think to save the link though.
