Even though the technology idea is given to the world, an inventor can benefit financially from the open source route of bringing the technology forward.
PES Network, Inc (owner of PESWiki) is glad to work with inventors to bring their technology forward via an open source method. We are confident that there are several revenue centers that can be tapped to make this path worth while.
First, you will want to determine if your project would be good for the open source route.
Open sourcing is ideal for game-changing technologies that meet the following criteria:
Non-encumbered intellectual property
Wide range of potential applications
Simple to build
Inexpensive to build
Open source projects should be presented clearly, accurately, and concisely, which can increase the number of people succeeding in replicating the idea and improving on it, and getting it to a form that can begin finding useful applications in the market.
The plausible revenue centers for the inventor of an open sourced technology and the team helping him present and coordinate it are:
Advertising revenue from site traffic
Sell well-formatted, clear, adequate plans in pdf for easy printout (e.g. through clickbank http://pesnetwork.reseller.hop.clickbank.net)
Commission relationship with vendors of key components
(Voluntary) license arrangements with manufacturers
Sell completed devices
You will need a team around you to tap into these revenue centers. We would be glad to do that for you.
PES Network pulls in a pretty good amount of money from Google Ads that appear on our sites. If you are helping us bring in more traffic, that can be a revenue source for you.
As we pull together some good plans of how to build this device, complete with source information, schematics, photos, video, and assembly instructions, and present this in a well-organized pdf document that people can download, we could sell these for e.g. $30 each, no problem. Even though all the information will also be available for free from our site, some people would prefer to just download and print, rather than have to hunt around for the information.
Also, we can build kits that people could buy and assemble. We could also sell completed units for people to play with. And when practical devices emerge, we can sell those.
We are not in this for the money, but we appreciate the funds that enable us to expand our reach and ability to see these technologies move forward. If we're making money off your idea, we want you to benefit from it.
If you have an awesome open source technology, per the above ingredients, we think that this could make you enough money to become your primary source of income, possibly even bringing you millions.
All of us benefit from the collaboration, and most importantly, the planet benefits. Win, win, win.
