[[Image:60-minutes cold fusion opening 300.jpg|right|frame|The CBS segment starts out: "Twenty years ago it appeared, for a moment, that all our energy problems could be solved. It was the announcement of cold fusion - nuclear energy like that which powers the sun - but at room temperature on a table top. It promised to be cheap, limitless and clean. Cold fusion would end our dependence on the Middle East and stop those greenhouse gases blamed for global warming. It would change everything. But then, just as quickly as it was announced, it was discredited. So thoroughly, that cold fusion became a catch phrase for junk science. Well, a funny thing happened on the way to oblivion - for many scientists today, cold fusion is hot again." ]
Cold Fusion is Hot Again
A report by CBS News' 60 Minutes program on April 19, 2009 states: "When first presented in 1989 cold fusion was quickly dismissed as junk science. But, as Scott Pelley reports, there's renewed buzz among scientists that cold fusion could lead to monumental breakthroughs in energy production."
In a surprisingly positive reivew, CBS gives out high hope for this long-maligned field of study. As of today, April 20, 2009, the day following their report, this story was listed #1 in their "Most Viewed Videos" at the bottom of each page, even more popular than their two recent stories on the singing sensation, Susan Boyle (which would have won had it come out the same day), which was produced 4 and 5 days ago.
: “We asked [Rob] Duncan [of The American Physical Society] to go with 60 Minutes to Israel where a lab called Energetics Technologies has reported some of the biggest energy gains yet. Duncan spent two days examining cold fusion experiments and investigating whether the measurements were accurate. Asked what he thought when he left the Israeli lab, Duncan told Pelley, ‘I thought, 'Wow. They've done something very interesting here.’” http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/04/17/60minutes/main4952167_page3.shtml

It was VERY encouraging from several points.
# 60 Minutes did a great job covering the story that CF is real.
# They reviewed the history of CF, even going so far as going to England's countryside to meet with Martin Fleischman, one of the two renounced electro-chemist scientists that were disgraced by their ever so smart peers. Even today, their names remain as a joke, even though 20 years later the proof to validate their work exists. Sound like HJ and OS: MYLOW's Magnetic Motor based on Howard Johnson's Design ????? There are numerous labs throughout the world trying to solve the unreliability of being able to repeatably make it work so as to commercialize it, even though the public still doesn't know or believe it works.
# Even today, 90% of the so called experts are still in denial of CF results. Garwin, one of the fathers of the atomic bomb, remains a skeptic. His criticism comes from his knowledge of physics and NOT from first hand taking the time to see for himself as 60 minutes has done. His expectation is that it must be something that can be consistently reproduced, otherwise he's not a believer. 60 minutes hopefully has changed that perspective many other, but Garwin remains defiantly negative. (flat world thinker)
# SRI Int'l in Menlo Park, CA (does extensive work for our gov't) has been able to produce over unity results ( over unity results of 25X) many times, yet the answer as to why still eludes them. The critics claim they don't know how to measure electricity!! At least you can't say the critics are paid nay sayers of the gov't since the gov't is backing CF big time. So 60 minutes set out to find an expert on measuring!
# I didn't like to hear the interviewed scientist talk about in the future, there could be a one for one replacement of fuel rods in a nuclear reactor. It implies that the idea of a home CF generator wouldn't happen, yet they were talking about powering your car with this technology. Go figure.
# The technology is essentially very simply, much as the HJ/Mylow motor. However there are some issues (20 years worth)(30 for Mylow) that still need to be ironed out (ditto with Mylow's and other's replication motors). He's talking 20 years out before we'll see major changes using CF. Better later than never.
# It was stated that D2O (Deuterium) which comes from water contains 10 times the energy as gasoline, and is one of three of the main ingredients. I knew there was a reason we have so much water. Palladium, which is a precious metal, will no doubt have the big oil companies fighting over the mining rights for this commodity. The 3rd ingredient is an electric current.
# The bad news is that they can't "consistently" (at best, 70% of the time) make the reaction happen, the heat may often be delayed by a significant amount of time, and the amount of energy output isn't always the same. The good news is that they think it's related to the processing of the metal. I can remember hearing this same story when flat screens were being developed.
# They approached "The American Physical Society" (The nation's top physics organization) and asked them to recommend them to an independent scientist. They got Rob Duncan, Vice Chancelor of Research at the University of Missouri, who's an expert in measuring energy. There's that measuring issue being addressed. He began his interview of CF as a non-believer. So, 60 minutes sent him to Israel, to meet with a company called Energetics Technologies Inc. (http://www.energetics.com/), a firm that has recorded the greatest energy gains yet from CF. After 2 days of Q&A of what they were doing and how they arrived at their results, he didn't trust their measurements, their math, so he did his own. To his surprise, he had to admit on 60 minutes that they in fact ARE producing excess heat/energy!!! He stated that he thought he'd never say that. (He must not be keeping up with the CF news).
# The Pentagon's Advanced Research Agency (DARPA) has an internal memo stating there's "no doubt that anomalous excess heat is produced in these experiments."
# The Pentagon is continuing to fund more research at the U.S. Naval Research Lab and SRI.
# During Fleischman's interview, he held in his hand an improved version of his CF device that he "had" been working on. When asked about how he feels about what happened, he remarked, "it was a wasted opportunity". Though his body is enduring many old age issues, he was excited at the potential that his work has created, even though he and his lab partner have endured ridicule from all the so called experts throughout the world. Maybe some day they will eventually be given their due recognition with a Nobel Prize for their discovery.
I'm sure everyone reading this can relate this story to PowerPedia:Howard Johnson and OS: MYLOW's Magnetic Motor based on Howard Johnson's Design's efforts. That being, the work was taken away from the creator(s) and carried on in the labs by scientists who were on the government payrolls, all the while the creator(s) were robbed of their work (never offered a job to continue their research) and disgraced for their contribution!!! Life isn't always nice nor fair.
