Magenn Air Rotor System (MARS)
The Magenn Air Rotor System (MARS) is a lighter-than-air turbine which is tethered to the ground between 300 and 1000 feet (roughly 90 to 300 meters) with conducting cables that transmit electricity to the ground. It is basically a blimp with its body configured with blades to catch the wind in order to generate power.
Deployed high in the air, the system accesses adequate wind speeds in areas otherwise unsuitable for wind.
At a comparable price, the renewable system would replace 10 kW diesel generators, while eliminating fuel supply and emissions issues.

Template: 43: Directory:Wind > Directory:High Altitude Wind Power > Directory:Magenn > NASA Takes a Look at the Jet Stream to Get 50 Times More Wind Power - NASA aerospace engineer Mark Moore is using a $100,000 federal grant to research what it will take to create a jet stream-based wind industry 30,000 feet above the ground where winds blow consistently at 150 miles per hour, so kite-type turbines such as those from Kitegen and Magenn ... (CleanTechnica December 31, 2010)Magenn Wind Power Turbine In The Sky - Called the MARS (Magenn Air Rotor System), Magenn's system utilizes an inflatible rotor that floats high above the air without requiring a tower, just a tether. The horizontally-rotating turbine uses large scoops that rotate around an axis, with generators on either end that send power back to earth via a tether. (Gas2 August 18, 2009)
Spinning Blimp Wind Turbines Take Test Flight - Magenn has begun testing a prototype of their MARS (Magenn Air Rotor System) inside an old US Navy airship hangar before beginning outdoor trials at a customer's site in a few weeks. (EcoGeek May 6, 2008)
Magenn Air Rotor System Finally Floats - Over-budget and two years behind schedule, Magenn has announced: "This is a world's first, there has never been a rotating airship test done before." The prototype will be moved to an outdoor location for further testing, followed by four demonstration projects. (TreeHugger May 5, 2008)
Magenn Airborne Wind Balloon Ideal for Remote Village Power - At a comparable price, the renewable system would replace 10 kW diesel generators, while eliminating fuel supply and emissions issues. Deployed on a tether 1,000 feet in the air, the system accesses adequate wind speeds in areas otherwise unsuitable for wind. (PESN June 11, 2007)
