M2E’s technology (Motion to Energy) is founded on the Faraday principle, whereby energy is produced from the motion of a magnet passing through a coil. M2E says the company has designed a system that will generate between 300 and 700 percent more power than other kinetic energy technologies available today.

According to the company website, M2E is presently focused on models and prototypes for military applications and commercial mobile electronic devices. The company’s future intentions include automotive, wind, and wave power applications, as well as nanochip technology.

They have developed several working models including D-Cell form factors, beginning configurations for military applications, and an external charger for mobile devices, available in 2009. M2E is seeking military and commercial partners to help bring its breakthrough technology to market.

M2E’s technology, a physics-level breakthrough, dramatically increases the amount of power that can be generated from kinetic energy. The power is produced by using motion-produced electromagnetic fields that are harvested, converted to electrical energy, and stored for use in a variety of scalable applications. The application possibilities span handheld, mobile devices to larger power requirements, such as hybrid vehicles and power systems for industrial use.

The technology originates from a fundamental change in magnetic architecture, and is composed of an integration of unique generator capability and energy/battery management electronics. The generator function is based on translation of kinetic energy into electric current via magnetic induction.

Increases in power output with M2E technology are estimated to range from 300-700% over existing configurations. Additionally, the technology complements existing applications, offers simplicity in its design, and uses “off-the-shelf? materials, making manufacturing costs comparable.

The M2E technology originated at the Idaho National Lab, where a Department of Energy-funded research group was charged with developing a mobile power solution to ease the U.S. Military’s burden of limited-power, short-life battery dependency. M2E inventor Eric Yarger and his team at the INL took up the challenge and were successful.

First Product: External Charger for Portable Devices

According to an Aug. 25, 2008 press release, the company's first product will be a portable charger for portable devices.

You would plug your portable device, say your cell phone, directly into the M2E External Charger to charge its battery, and it does retain its existing battery (although future developments from M2E should eventually integrate the technology into the actual battery itself). You could keep your device continuously plugged in to the M2E charger to ensure uninterrupted power, or you can plug in to the M2E charger on an as-needed basis. About 6 hours of normal movement can generate 30-60 minutes of talk time on a cell phone, so it is definitely feasible to plug into the M2E charge a few times a day, depending on how heavily the device is used.

And yes, the M2E charger is meant to eliminate the need for any other mobile device chargers that plug into the wall or car, in fact, it will have a plug on it, just in case you do need emergency power and need to plug in to a socket. So you really could throw away all other wall or car chargers.
