: What if a distributed energy technology were developed that removed the need for fuel or wires, harnessing energy from the wheelwork of nature that is inexhaustible and ubiquitous. In actuality, such devices are in development, so the possibility that this could indeed materialize is not only high, but the time-frame could be fairly soon. The devices are not free, but the "fuel" is, since nature provides it for free. And many of the developing technologies look like they could not only be ecological but economical -- more affordable than present technologies.

: Another side issue is that many years ago, before the dawn of "planned obsolescence", permanent filaments were developed. If we reintroduced those, then these light fixtures could run for decades with no service other than cleaning.

Lamp Lit by Gravity Wins Greener Gadget Award - A Virginia Tech student has created a floor LED lamp that is powered by gravity, using a weight slide similar to the concept of a grandfather clock.
