Many studies have been conducted around this technology that have proven it’s benefits. In 1970s in an effort to reduce payload capacity NASA studied this technology and found it to increased flame speed and extended lean burn ratios for internal combustion engines (ICE) in other words adding Hydrogen causes the fuel to burn faster and more completely meaning less wasted fuel and oxygen a very import discovery when you have to transport your fuel and oxygen where you are going. A1974, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), prepared a report for the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) entitled “On-Board Hydrogen Generator for a Partial Hydrogen Injection Internal Combustion Engine”.
The California Environmental Engineering (CEE) who tested this technology and found reduction on all exhaust emissions. Their report stated: “CEE feels that the result of this test verified that this technology is a viable source for reducing emissions and fuel consumption.”

We know from numerous studies that adding Hydrogen to an Petroleum Powered Internal Combustion Engine causes the fuel to burn faster and more completely. The power stroke of a typical Internal Combustion Engine is as follows:
In the past improvement in fuel economy improvement was limited to about 5-30% due to defaults set up in vehicles ECU. This is the problem, when hydrogen is introduced it would increases the rpms of the engine and the ECU would reduce the fuel. The amount of Hydrogen that could be added was limited by the oxygen sensor and engine timing.
As H2 is increased the O2 sensor gives a lower voltage output typically indicating to much Oxygen and to little fuel. However, we know oxygen is being consumed not produced in a combustion equation and Hydrogen extends the lean operating range meaning less fuel and oxygen in the exhaust gas. The reason is the O2 sensor give a lower signal is that it is actually measuring the Air Fuel Ratio. The O2 sensor is actually is a catalytic converter and a thermocouple and since there is less O2 and Fuel available to be converted by the sensor into heat on the platinum surface and it is the heat that is converted into a voltage the sensor has a lower voltage output. This lower voltage output dose two things 1) tells use that the hydrogen is driving lean bur conditions in the engines cylinder and 2) results in more fuel being delivered to the engine because the ECU is trying to maintain a Air Fuel ratio of 14.7/1 and dose not know you are adding Hydrogen to the system.
There are 2 ways to increase you MPG due to this set up reduce the amount of Hydrogen being delivered to your vehicle or manipulate the signals to your ECU.
Most system actually deliver too much Hydrogen to the engine upsetting the O2 sensor and causing the engine to work harder because it is combusting too much fuel before reaching TDC. By delivering a small amount of Hydrogen gas to the engine usually between .1l-.5l based on your fuel consumption is enough to improve combustion properties but not upset signal outputs and and the ECU will naturally default to a better map table due to increased RPM giving you better mileage. O2 Extenders can then be added to the pre catalytic Oxygen Sensors this will place the sensor higher in the exhaust gas where more Oxygen and Fuel Vapor can be found giving a higher voltage output and reducing the fuel injected into the engine.
The other way was to manipulate signal output from the O2 sensor with EFIE which adds voltage to the O2 sensor output but because of the timing issue you can quickly start losing ground trying to do this because as you add more Hydrogen your RPM will start to slow again because you are combusting too much fuel before it reaches TDC creating more work during the compression stroke.
Today this technology is being rediscovered due to higher fuel prices and concerns over global warming. People are learning that installing these type system in their current vehicle improves their gas mileage and reduces emission. In fact many people are getting better gas milage by converting their current vehicle into a Hydrogen/Gas or Hydrogen/Diesel Hybrid than they could by buying a new Gas /Electric Hybrid.

Hydrogen Tuning can be accomplished in two way,s the new map values can be loaded directly onto your car’s ECU using some custom software or they can be placed on a flash drive where your ECU references the table.
To place the new map on your ECU requires computer an install program and OBII connector wire. It is done a location that install HHO Units. Although the installation is simple this is way to maintain control over software licensing.
The other way vendor keep control over their softwares is by using flash drive with map table for a single vehicle. This flash drive connects to your OBII connection and uses this high speed serial input/output to communicate directly with the ECU . This flash drive can be installed in about an hour and can be done by most DIY.
