Image:Butanol molecule 95.jpg

Directory:Butanol - Butanol is compatible with gasoline. It uses the same air/fuel mixture and has the same energy content. It can be mixed with gasoline in any ratio in unmodified engines. Butanol can be produced at an estimated cost of 85 cents per gallon, and is a direct replacement for gasoline.

Directory:Ethanol - For modified gasoline engines (if over 30-50% ethanol mix). Ethanol requires a richer air/fuel mix than does gasoline (9-to-1 as opposed to 15-to-1)(timing change, usually done easily with the car's fuel monitoring system). Ethanol is rated at 105 octane. These factors may result in lower mileage using ethanol blended gasoline.Ethanol is corrosive to engine and fuel line parts only in pre-1984 vehicles. In a typical automobile engine, ethanol burns about 92% cleaner than gasoline, and 20-40 degrees(F) cooler.(see:

Directory:Alternative Fuels / Directory:Microorganisms in Energy Production > Directory:Microorganisms in Energy Production > Bacteria could make car fuel from thin air - An enzyme produced by a common soil bacterium may help produce usable automobile fuel from a vehicle's own exhaust pipe, according to a study conducted by researchers from the University of California and the California Institute of Technology. When deprived of nitrogen and oxygen but supplied with carbon monoxide, vanadium nitrogenase produces two-to-three-atom carbon chains of ethane and propane.... Engineers Develop Higher-energy Liquid-transportation Fuel From Sugar - University of Wisconsin-Madison chemical and biological engineering Professor James Dumesic and his research team describe a two-stage process for turning biomass-derived sugar into 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF), a liquid transportation fuel with 40 percent greater energy density than ethanol. (Science Daily June 20, 2007)

Image:Glucose into HFM 95x95.jpg

Kicking the Oil Habit with Sugar - Scientists have discovered a way to convert glucose into HFM (hydroxymethylfurfural), a chemical that is broken down into components used to manufacture products now made from oil. It may lead to a method of replacing crude oil with an environmentally friendly, cheap renewable plant matter as the base component for fuels and plastic. (TreeHugger Jun. 15, 2007)

Image:H2Car 95x95.jpg

H2CAR could fuel entire U.S. transportation sector - In a recent study, scientists have demonstrated that a hybrid system of hydrogen and carbon can produce a sufficient amount of liquid hydrocarbon fuels to power the entire U.S. transportation sector. Using biomass to produce the carbon, and solar energy to produce hydrogen, the process requires only a fraction of the land area needed by other proposed methods. (PhysOrg Apr. 24, 2007)

Sugar Researchers Consider Next Alternative Fuel - Amyris Biotechnologies hopes to make gasoline, diesel and jet fuel from sugar within 5 to 10 years. Scientists know how ethanol is made by adding sugar to yeast, but now they can re-program the microbes to make something closer to gasoline using technology known as "synthetic biology". (NewsMax Jan. 30, 2007)

Image:LS9 Renewable Petroleum 95x95.jpg

LS9, Inc. - Using synthetic biology, LS9 is developing biofuels designed to closely resemble petroleum derived fuels, but be renewable, clean, domestically produced, and cost competitive. Derived from diverse agricultural feedstocks, these high energy liquid fuels are compatible with current distribution and consumer infrastructure.

Image:LS9 biochemist 95x95.jpg

Building Better Biofuels - LS9 is using synthetic biology to engineer bacteria that can make hydrocarbons for gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. Hydrocarbon fuels are better suited than ethanol to existing delivery infrastructure and engines, and their manufacture would require less energy. Amyris and SunEthanol are also trying to use synthetic biology to produce biofuels. (MIT Technology Review Jun. 6, 2007)

Aquanol aqueous fuel is alcohol mixed with up to a 50% concentration of water. It is ignited by a catalytic plasma torch. By leaving some water in the alcohol, the cost of production is reduced and the engine runs cooler. Since the water's mass absorbs some of the thermal energy of the combustion process, less work is required of the cooling system, meaning greater power and fuel economy.
