Script

Collaborative composition here.

Imagine the year 2050. New energy devices have been developed and widely implemented that inexpensively harness inexhaustible, ubiquitous energy, and they produce no pollution while doing so.

The primary sources of pollution have been transformed so that they are now non-polluting. Oil is used for products and lubrication, not fuel. Some energy devices actually clean the environment as they produce energy, and they, along with other purifying technologies that have been deployed, have cleared up nearly all pollution. Global warming has been halted and is in process of being reversed. The endangered habitats on land and at sea are beginning to thrive again.

You can drive or fly your vehicle without ever having to stop for fuel. Each home and business generates its own energy, as do most appliances. Power cords and lines are a distant memory.

Energy is so inexpensive that it has penetrated every culture on the planet, relieving starvation, promoting health, and encouraging the vast development of responsible human potential that is harmonious with the Earth's ecosystem. The scarcity mentality has been replaced by an ethical abundance mentality. Geopolitical tensions have eased.

This vision is not impossible to achieve.

TECHNOLOGY REVIEW

Technologies now exists, or are being developed, that will make this dream for tomorrow something that is within our grasp if we so choose. Let us explore a few of these presently-existing capabilities as well as some of the most promising possibilities. Bear in mind that this is not a comprehensive listing. New inventions are sure to come along that will be even better. The point is that there are already technologies available that can bring about this bright future.

Even now, breakthroughs in Solar technologies are beginning to make it competitive with conventional energy sources. New alternatives to silicon are poised to ease the shortage that has been impeding the speedy and cost-effective production of a wide range of photovoltaic devices. China presently has plans to install over a hundred solar power plants, each of which will generate around one hundred megawatts of electricity. Their combined output will be equivalent to five nuclear power plants of 2 Gigawatts each. (Ref. Jim Dunn double check).

Elsewhere, contracts are being forged to install large Solar towers, whose turbines capture the energy of the rising air, heated from a skirt as wide as the tower is high. These towers have been shown to work even on cloudy days, inasmuch as the temperature difference is what causes the heated air to rise. Furthermore, by storing heat in salt beds beneath the panels, the plant is able to produce electricity during the night, as well as provide the extra power needed in the morning and evening when the peak load demands occur. These capabilities make this emerging technology the first Solar facility that will be able to provide primary power for the grid. And all this can be done at a price comparable to the cheaper coal power plants. (Ref. solar tower)

Meanwhile, some of the large wind turbines presently in operation have already achieved the milestone of producing electricity more inexpensively than the average conventional energy methods. The offshore turbines have increased wind exposure, while avoiding the eyesore....
