Miller-cycle Engine Improves Fuel Economy - Mazda has developed a Miller-cycle gasoline engine which employs delayed closing of the intake valves to reduce pumping losses and improve thermal efficiency. Purdue scientists claim 'major leap' in engine design - A new type of engine could dramatically reduce oil consumption and the emission of global-warming pollutants. Variable valve actuation would enable significant improvements in conventional gasoline and diesel engines because the valves' timing would no longer be restricted by the pistons' movement. The Linear Combustion Engine - Researchers are developing a linear combustion engine, with two opposing pistons at either end of a cylinder. The design promises greater efficiency than rotary combustion engines, but it requires sophisticated control electronics to keep the system in check. New engine to slash 50% off emissions - Epicam's dexpressor concept would harvest wasted car exhaust heat to drive a pump-like rotor, improving engine efficiency, emissions and fuel economy up to 50 per cent. A heat exchange coil around the exhaust manifold of the engine super-heats water, building up pressure that is used to turn rotors that feed into the crankshaft of the engine. The Ultra-Efficient, Two-Stroke Bonner Engine - The Army Research Laboratory’s Vehicle Technology Directorate is presenting (pdf) three unconventional engine concepts: a low-power, high energy-density Nutating engine a turbine that uses a semi-closed engine cycle with vapor-absorption refrigeration and the Bonner Engine, a two-stroke combustion engine in which two cylinders reciprocate in a 90° X-configuration. OBVIO! to License Rotoblock Oscillating Piston Engine for Flex-Fuel Hybrids - Brazilian automotive company OBVIO! has signed a development and license agreement with Rotoblock Corporation for the development and incorporation of a more compact Oscillating Piston Engine—a toroidal internal combustion engine —into the OBVIO! 828, 012 and subsequent models. OBVIO! is in the process of manufacturing two microcars powered by traditional internal combustion engines and the company is interested in the OPE’s ability to be incorporated into an ethanol hybrid drive train projected for production. MIT's pint-sized car engine promises high efficiency, low cost - MIT researchers are developing a half-sized gasoline engine that performs like its full-sized cousin, with hybrid-like fuel efficiency at a far lower cost. Injection of ethanol directly into the engine's cylinders when under heavy load prevents engine knock, allowing efficiencies from higher turbocharging and compression ratios.
