Welcome

Hi Todd,

Welcome to PESWiki. I saw in your application that you were interested in helping with PESWiki oversight. That will be much appreciated.

I've made you (User:Pep) a Sysop.

That task involves the following:

  • Welcome new members. Acknowledge their major contributions to the site. (Note that whenever a message is posted on a user's "discussion" page, that a memo comes up for them the next time they view any page at PESWiki, with a link to their discussion page to see what has been posted. That is a very nice feature.)
  • Helping to catch&fix errors.
  • Help get energy buffs to get excited about PESWiki and get involved in populating and monitoring the content. We want to be the Wikipedia of Clean Energy.
  • Develop support documents for instructions on how to use the site and perform certain tasks.
  • Protect and unprotect pages as needed. We generally keep most pages unprotected. A person must be logged in to edit.
  • Seeing that new pages posted are properly named and formatted
  • Help coordinate the projects that are hosted at PESWiki such as the new Flynn Parallel Path replication project.
  • Catch spammers as soon as they arrive and ban them.
  • Upgrade the mediawiki software from time to time and oversee catching any bugs and addressing as needed. The present version is very stable. It's going to take me a lot of convincing to change any time soon.
  • Help NEC members get profile pages built.
  • Build index pages for each of the top 100 technologies. Some already have a page.

One of the projects that needs to be overseen is to transfer all the content from the directory pages at http://FreeEnergyNews.com/Directory over to PESWiki so that they can be collaboratively expanded and branched.

A big NEC task we have will be to interface PESWiki with http://energyscore.com and vise versa. Not a super high priority.

I don't know how familiar you are with wikis, but we do have a welcome page for people who already know the language, to orient them to some of the unique way be do things here.

I will tell you that generally speaking people in the alt energy field have been very slow to dive in and participate on PESWiki. It is an uphill battle. Most of the content here was placed here by me. I would like to see at least half of the contributions coming from other people by a month or two from now. We're getting closer -- 1.5 years after starting.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I'm available most of the time for brief questions. I prefer Skype for quickies. I'll need a heads up for longer conversations.
