From PESWiki
The statement,
If enough people implement this practice in a municipality, it creates a peak electricity problem that can end up wasting more energy than is being saved.
needs to be explained. The peak demand will increase, thus causing problems for the power company, but how can a device that is efficient suddenly result in inefficiency when used in large numbers?

See the following article:
- Tankless Water Heaters are Brutal on the Grid When Popularized (http://pesn.com/2005/10/18/9600191_Tankless_Water_Heaters_Stress_Grid/) - Tankless water heaters draw energy on demand, and do not have a thermal energy storage facet. Multiplied by many customers' hot-water usage patterns, these surges of energy amount to a significantly higher peak load for utilities, resulting in increased costs and, more significantly, in increased waste during non-peak times. tankless-water-heater
We replaced our old tank-type water
heater about 2 years ago. We installed
a Tankless Water Heater. It has worked flawlessly since the day we installed it. The unit is very small and compact, yet
provides an unlimited supply of hot water for our entire household.
