What is Hydrogen Embrittlement?

Sept. 14, 2005 (ref)

Bad news for gas engines converted to run on hydrogen.

Hydrogen Embrittlement has been detected in some engine components, in some cases severely.

It occurs when Hydrogen gas dissolves into the structure of certain metals (usually Aluminum & Steels).

It can cause cracking and failure of metal components.

    • Hydrogen Embrittlement - A type of deterioration which can be linked to corrosion and corrosion-control processes. It involves the ingress of hydrogen into a component, an event that can seriously reduce the ductility and load-bearing capacity, cause cracking and catastrophic brittle failures at stresses below the yield stress of susceptible materials.

Xado repairs hydrogen embrittlement damage by filling grooves and crevaces and fills with a ceramic coating.

Response

  • Hydrogen embrittlement not a substantial threat - Hydrogen-conversion expert, and clean-fuel specialist, Tai Robinson, responds to assertion that when hydrogen gas dissolves into the structure of certain metals such as aluminum & steels, it can cause cracking and failure of metal components.
