PowerPedia:Armstrong oscillator
From PESWiki
The Armstrong oscillator is an oscillator and is named after its inventor, Edwin Armstrong. This circuit is a form of the regenerative receiver.
Description
The Armstrong oscillator produces a sine-wave output of constant amplitude and of fairly constant frequency within the RF range. The oscillator is used as a local type in receiver, as a source in signal generators, and as a radio-frequency oscillator in the medium- and high-frequency range.
Armstrong oscillator are sometimes refered to as "tickler oscillator" because feedback is provided using a tickler coil. The feedback via magnetic coupling between a larger coil and a smaller coil. The frequency of oscillation is determined by the tank circuit, primarily. In practice, the loading of coil has some effect on the frequency of operation.
