Technical

The technical section of the Naturee's wheelwork is used to discuss technical issues about PESWiki. Bugs and feature requests should be made at BugZilla since there is no guarantee developers will read this page.

Newcomers to the technical village pump are encouraged to read these guidelines prior to posting here. Questions about MediaWiki in general should be posted at the support desk.

Frequently Asked Questions: (see also PESWiki:Technical FAQ)

  • Intermittent database lags can make new articles take some minutes to appear, and cause the watchlist, contributions, and page history/old views sometimes not show the very latest changes. This is an ongoing issue we are working on.
  • The search index is often out of date, sometimes taking weeks before it's updated. Because of that, recent changes are not immediately reflected on the search.
  • Spell checking has been disabled on the PESWiki search engine for performance reasons.
  • If all the links in the articles suddenly become underlined (or the opposite), or red links instead end with a red question mark (or the opposite), or paragraphs are fully justified instead of left justified (or the opposite), it's probably because your browser failed to load one of the stylesheets (or the server sent you a wrong one). Do a forced reload or bypass your cache.
  • If you have problems making your fancy signature work, check PESWiki:How to fix your signature.
  • If an image thumbnail is not showing, try purging its image description page (if the image is from Wikimedia Commons, you might have to purge there too). If it doesn't work, try again.
  • If the section edit links are being pushed down by floated images, check PESWiki:How to fix bunched up edit links.
  • If you are asked to download a file (index.php) when trying to edit, or your browser launches an image editor when trying to edit, disable "Use external editor" on your preferences.

Profile Footer

I've created a new template Template:Profile footer to add to the "See also" section at the bottom of pages where a user has filled in some info about themselves. -- SilverThunder 10:16, 27 Dec 2006 (EST)

Wikinfo

Made a wikifo template. Another source to search ... "|test_test|test test}}" would be the arguments for it (*notice the _ underscore in the 1st argument).

Foreign Languages

Do any of you know how to configure a wiki to handle multiple languages? SilverThunder 09:31, 14 Aug 2006 (EDT)

I don't ... but I'll looks around [probably tomarrow]. Reddi

Found this but I don't think this is the http://moinmoin.wikiwikiweb.de/MultipleLanguagesSupport/Problems Who wants those translated system and help pages?

Looking around mediawiki I found these variable that are relevant ...

$wgInterwikiMagic
$wgLanguageCode

I'll keep looking into this ... doesn't look too promising though for an automated conversion ...

As for manually doing it ... these are from Wikipedia Machine Translation Project (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Machine_Translation_Project)

  • Translation rules
  • Code
Unfortunately none of these projects seem to have been updated since around 2003.
    • Interlingua Translator (Translator under LGPL)
        • Translate every text in an abstract unique digital Interlingua (Parser)
        • Translate the Interlingua to the new text (Generator)
        • Written in Java
    • GPLTran (Translator under GPL)
        • Supposed to translate paragraphs or entire webpapges
        • Paragraph translation is spotty and buggy
        • Web translation doesn't seem to work at all.
      • Actually this isn't machine translation, it is a literal word-for-word translation
      • Download code at http://www.translator.cx/dist/
    • Linguaphile (Translator under GPL)
    • Traduki
      • C/Lua-based project, uses the metalanguage approach with Esperanto for lexycal content (to some extent)
      • Project restarted in 2003, current being developed
      • http://traduki.sourceforge.net (version 0.2 released, and translates "The dog eats the apple" to Esperanto: "La hundo mangxas la pomon")
I like the idea use traduki. One can use traduki keys to stablish relations between words in different languages. I.e. hundo is the key to en:dog, es:perro and so on. So, going to hundo, you can add another translation to other lnnguages, without add language: links in the es:perro article, for example.

New template

G
Site
{{{1}}} on {{{3}}} (http://www.google.com/custom?svnum=50&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&sa=N&tab=wi&sitesearch={{{1}}}&q={{{2}}})
via Google Search

Template:GoogleSite

template:GoogleSite takes 3 parameters. The site URL (the http:// is not needed). The term with pluses (+). And then the display term.

So if I wanted to look up "Google Web" sites. I would put in brackets Google.com|Google+Web|Google Web

That would give me the thing on the right in a box.
