Welcome to Nature's wheelwork newcomers and oldtimers! This is where PESWikins raise and try to answer PESWiki-related questions and concerns regarding technical issues, policies, and operation in our community. This set of pages is used to discuss PESWiki. You can view all Nature's wheelwork sections at once here. The Nature's wheelwork is not a place to make lasting comments as inactive discussions are archived, and then later permanently removed.

To facilitate ease of browsing and replying, please:

  1. Place your questions at the correct page: Use the links below to locate the page to add a new question.
  2. Title the question (by typing == title ==) : If you use the new section edit link, just enter a subject.
  3. Please sign and date your post (by typing ~~~~ or clicking the signature icon in the edit toolbar).

Table of contents

Discussions that are dated are moved to a sub page of each section (called (section name)/Archive). These discussions will be kept archived for a peroid of time. During this period the discussion can be moved to a relevant talk page if appropriate. After that, the discussion will be permanently removed.

Nature's wheelwork

Technical

The technical section of the Naturee's wheelwork is used to discuss technical issues about PESWiki. Bugs and feature requests should be made at BugZilla since there is no guarantee developers will read this page.

Newcomers to the technical village pump are encouraged to read these guidelines prior to posting here. Questions about MediaWiki in general should be posted at the support desk.

Frequently Asked Questions: (see also PESWiki:Technical FAQ)

  • Intermittent database lags can make new articles take some minutes to appear, and cause the watchlist, contributions, and page history/old views sometimes not show the very latest changes. This is an ongoing issue we are working on.
  • The search index is often out of date, sometimes taking weeks before it's updated. Because of that, recent changes are not immediately reflected on the search.
  • Spell checking has been disabled on the PESWiki search engine for performance reasons.
  • If all the links in the articles suddenly become underlined (or the opposite), or red links instead end with a red question mark (or the opposite), or paragraphs are fully justified instead of left justified (or the opposite), it's probably because your browser failed to load one of the stylesheets (or the server sent you a wrong one). Do a forced reload or bypass your cache.
  • If you have problems making your fancy signature work, check PESWiki:How to fix your signature.
  • If an image thumbnail is not showing, try purging its image description page (if the image is from Wikimedia Commons, you might have to purge there too). If it doesn't work, try again.
  • If the section edit links are being pushed down by floated images, check PESWiki:How to fix bunched up edit links.
  • If you are asked to download a file (index.php) when trying to edit, or your browser launches an image editor when trying to edit, disable "Use external editor" on your preferences.

Profile Footer

I've created a new template Template:Profile footer to add to the "See also" section at the bottom of pages where a user has filled in some info about themselves. -- SilverThunder 10:16, 27 Dec 2006 (EST)

Wikinfo

Made a wikifo template. Another source to search ... "|test_test|test test}}" would be the arguments for it (*notice the _ underscore in the 1st argument).

Foreign Languages

Do any of you know how to configure a wiki to handle multiple languages? SilverThunder 09:31, 14 Aug 2006 (EDT)

I don't ... but I'll looks around [probably tomarrow]. Reddi

Found this but I don't think this is the http://moinmoin.wikiwikiweb.de/MultipleLanguagesSupport/Problems Who wants those translated system and help pages?

Looking around mediawiki I found these variable that are relevant ...

$wgInterwikiMagic
$wgLanguageCode

I'll keep looking into this ... doesn't look too promising though for an automated conversion ...

As for manually doing it ... these are from Wikipedia Machine Translation Project (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Machine_Translation_Project)

  • Translation rules
  • Code
Unfortunately none of these projects seem to have been updated since around 2003.
    • Interlingua Translator (Translator under LGPL)
        • Translate every text in an abstract unique digital Interlingua (Parser)
        • Translate the Interlingua to the new text (Generator)
        • Written in Java
    • GPLTran (Translator under GPL)
        • Supposed to translate paragraphs or entire webpapges
        • Paragraph translation is spotty and buggy
        • Web translation doesn't seem to work at all.
      • Actually this isn't machine translation, it is a literal word-for-word translation
      • Download code at http://www.translator.cx/dist/
    • Linguaphile (Translator under GPL)
    • Traduki
      • C/Lua-based project, uses the metalanguage approach with Esperanto for lexycal content (to some extent)
      • Project restarted in 2003, current being developed
      • http://traduki.sourceforge.net (version 0.2 released, and translates "The dog eats the apple" to Esperanto: "La hundo mangxas la pomon")
I like the idea use traduki. One can use traduki keys to stablish relations between words in different languages. I.e. hundo is the key to en:dog, es:perro and so on. So, going to hundo, you can add another translation to other lnnguages, without add language: links in the es:perro article, for example.

Template:GoogleSite

template:GoogleSite takes 3 parameters. The site URL (the http:// is not needed). The term with pluses (+). And then the display term.

So if I wanted to look up "Google Web" sites. I would put in brackets Google.com|Google+Web|Google Web

That would give me the thing on the right in a box.

Proposals

Nature's wheelwork

Proposals

The proposals section of the Nature's wheelwork is used to discuss new ideas and proposals that are not policy related (see PESWiki:Village pump (policy) for that). If you have a proposal for something that sounds overwhelmingly obvious and are amazed that PESWiki doesn't have it, please check there first before posting it, as someone else might have found it obvious, too.

Before posting your proposal:

  • If the proposal is a change to the software, file a bug at Bugzilla (http://bugzilla.wikimedia.org) instead. Your proposal is unlikely to be noticed by a developer unless it is placed there.
  • If the proposal is a change in policy, be sure to also post the proposal to, say, PESWiki:Manual of style, and ask people to discuss it there.
  • If the proposal is for a new wiki-style project outside of PESWiki, please go to Proposals for new departments and follow the guidelines there. Please do not post it here.

Page Content to Migrate

Existing content to migrate to PESWiki:

  • Tidal Energy -- A Primer (http://www.freeenergynews.com/Directory/Tidal/TidalEnergyPrimer-06.pdf) - Prepared by Martin Burger of Blue Energy, a tidal energy company. Has given permission to tranfer its contents to the PowerPedia:Tidal_Power page for expansion.

Collaboration

I've established a cross-linking relationship Stefan Hartman's http://OverUnity.com forum. I have links to his site from the navigation structure of all four of our PES Network sites, including this one. He has a link to PESWiki and FreeEnergyNews from his global navigation structure.

The next area of collaboration is topic-by-topic interlinking.

I would like to see links from our topical pages to the specific discussion pages at OverUnity.com; and likewise a link from the OverUnity.com topic pages to our PESWiki feature pages on the same topics. There is a lot of synergistic coverage that ought to be cross-correlated.

This interlinking will increase the quality of both sites, as each has an attribute that has been lacking from the other. That void can be filled by this active exchange.

So as you create new pages and edit existing pages, please take a quick look at OverUnity.com to see if they have coverage of that topic, to add a link to it.

I've asked Stefan to let me know what the best way would be to establish links from OverUnity.com pages back to PESWiki.

One thing we ought to do is create a cross-linking index page here that follows the same sequence as is found at the home page of OverUnity.com

Thanks. -- SilverThunder 12:02, 25 Nov 2006 (EST)

Needs Attention

  • Rramjet went into Directory:Hydrogen_from_Water and added a bunch of "related sites" that are not specific to the topic, but which are general sites. It's good material, but doesn't belong on that page, and I'm not sure it really belongs anywhere that we don't already have covered already. We may just need to undo what he did. I don't have time right now to scrutinize it, but something needs to be done. -- SilverThunder 00:46, 23 Nov 2006 (EST)
  • I checked the material and agree that it doesn't belong on that page. I think the better portions are already covered elsewhere, so I changed it back to the previous version. --John Q. Public 23:59, 5 Dec 2006 (EST)

BODY: The technologies inherit benefits developed during 3.8 Billion years of evolutionary optimization in nature’s ocean laboratory. The resulting systems move and sway in tune with the forces of the ocean, and naturally streamline when extreme conditions prevail. This leads to low design thresholds and associated low costs. The inherently simple bioWAVE™ and bioSTREAM™ devices are designed to supply utility-scale grid-connected renewable energy using lightweight modular systems. These systems will reside beneath the ocean surface, out of view, and in harmony with the living creatures that inspired their design.

Reply: Our focus is on the technoogy, not the politics. So the "air scooter" would belong on the pneumatic directory page; not sure if th eother one belongs. We want to focus on cutting edge energy technologies that will/could make a profound difference.

Since these machines cost the same as a car (under US $20,000) (http://www.gizmag.com/go/4628/) and are available to the masses (no pilot license), what kind of gas mileage might they get compared to a car? I found another site http://www.pal-v.com/ with a similar machine that is said to get 30km/litre @ 100 km/h (http://www.gizmag.com/go/3323/2/). That is equal to 70 mpg in American gallons or 85 mpg in Imperial gallons. Combine that with being able to bypass traffic jams, and you're looking at a huge reduction in energy consumption if it catches on. The product at http://www.pal-v.com/ can also drive on the road with the rotor blades folded in. In that regard it could be listed at Directory:Fuel_Efficiency_Vehicles, but I don't know what the mileage is on land. I think these flying machines are as noteworthy as Directory:Aeroscraft and more worthy than the Moller Skycar which you have at http://freeenergynews.com/Directory/Transportation/index.html . I just think there should be some sort of directory for flight or aviation. --John Q. Public 19:40, 25 Oct 2006 (EDT)

Correction: That mileage is for land travel. I found it on the Product (http://www.pal-v.com/index2.php?page=product) page. --John Q. Public 00:42, 3 Nov 2006 (EST)
