Eaton Water Fuel Cell replication project
HybridTech Energy of Lafayette, Louisiana, USA, sent out an announcement on Nov. 12, 2009 that they are in process of releasing plans to the world for building a water fuel cell that they say produces enough hydroxy gas from water to run a generator to keep the electrolysis cell going as well as producing excess electricity for other use. In other words, it is a self-looped system with excess energy produced in the process.
As of Feb. 26, 2010, no one that we know of has been able to replicate the Eaton Fuel Cell effect claimed, though several have tried.
HybridTech is presently involved in selling a hydrogen boost device for Semi-Trucks. It splits water into hydroxy gas which is then injected into the air intake of the engine to effect a more efficient burn of the fuel. They've been selling these for about eight months. They're also currently designing systems for agricultural and off road heavy equipment, as well as large units for locomotives and ships, and big torches.

Of course, the generator was providing the power to the fuel cells as well."

HybridTech posts demo video of "200% Efficient" water fuel cell by Dr. Steve Eaton - Dr. Eaton's HHO cell is shown making 1 liter of hydroxy gas in 12 seconds drawing 12 volts, 23.6 amps. This is an update of the technology we announced last week that is open sourcing their design. (PESWiki; Nov. 23, 2009)

"200% Efficient" water fuel cell by Dr. Steve Eaton
- "Watch Dr. Steve Eaton's HHO cell make 1 liter HHO in 12 seconds using 12 volts, 23.6 amps." This comes to 5 liters per minutes and is said to be far more than what standard electrolysis is capable of producing. Power supply: 12-V Battery Booster; Room temp: 70.2 F; Cell water temp: 95 F; Electrolyte: 1 g. KOH per gallon of water. (YouTube; Nov. 23, 2009)

HybridTech Energy Fuel Cell Tests and Explanation
"Doc" Eaton explains the fuel cell set-up and why he thinks it is overunity. Some tests run showing 1) a torch being run from a cell that is said to be producing 15 LPM; 2) a volume test that appears to show a 1-L bottle being filled with gas in 12-13 seconds [but doesn't refute the possibility of there being a small hole in the bottom of the bottle, which would explain the rapid drainage at first, slowing as the water gets toward the bottom. I have built the cell 3 times now. The first two were half size in length, just for testing.
All parts were laser cut for accuracy, I used 316L stainless as I already know the problems with rust using 304.
I changed the method of using the nylon insulation .15 as I could see that the wrapping around the tube method would impeded the flow of gas, so I drilled very small holes in the tubes at the bottom and cut small slots at the top and then fed the nylon through one pair of holes and brought the ends to the top of the tube and tied together at the slots. This gave me 4 straight lines of nylon that would not impede the flow of gas.
All parts were TIG welded (bought a TIG welder to do the job) and welded with 316 stainless wire and argon gas.
The rest of the plans were followed exactly. The conditioning was followed as per plan and also extended an extra day.
Results from all 3 tests were very disappointing, current draw was higher than expected, gas production was far less than expected.
I still have some stainless steel header plates left over that I haven't used. If anyone wants them, pay the postage and they are yours.
I am not wasting any more time of money on this project, no-one seems to have replicated it successfully, and I doubt from calculating the surface area of the active parts that it would be possible to produce any amount of gas as stated.
As for the algae that is suppose to be formed if alcohol is not added to the conditioning formula, algae is a basic form of plant life that can only exist under certain conditions, one of which is an abundance of sunlight (UV). The so called algae that is formed is nothing more than rust through using 304 stainless steel, this does not form if using 316.
The use of a MIG welder is fine as long as stainless wire is used, however a TIG welder is much easier to use for this project as the parts are very small and thin, and also the MIG has a splatter problem that the TIG does not have.
OK, so I am more than $1000 out of pocket on this experiment, and wasted a very lot of time, but at least I gave it a go (3 times) and found it to be unsuccessful for me.
Dry cells are working fine, new design I have been working on produces a good amount of gas, is easier and cheaper to build and has no design problems. I will continue to develop that range of products.

I am testing the cell. So far I have not gotten the results I had hoped for. I conditioned the tubes for 5 days, changing out the distilled water. I got a lot of red water due to using 304 stainless until the 5th day, in which the water cleared up. Each day I would start with the distilled water at 3 amps and it would work up to 20 amps and I would shut down after it hit 175 degrees in about 5 hours. Next day I would change out water and run again. The 5th day, I could run for most of the day before hitting the 175 degrees. (My container is PVC and didn't want a melt down) I tried two tests: 1/2 gram of KOH then 1/2 gram of NAOH in gallon of distilled water and both times too conductive, went to 60+ amps when connected directly to 12 volt battery in my Ford Expedition running at 13 volts under load. I put a PWM in the circut to hold at 28 amps and it did produce 500ml per minute at 60 degrees F. I had problems fitting the unit in the 4 inch pvc tube and had to trim the tubesheet so it would not cut through the insullation divider that I used. I tried pvc sheet first and eventually ended up with tire intertube rubber as the pvc was softer and holed through easily and shorted out.
I did deviate from the instructions in two areas. 1) I used MIG instead of TIG to tack weld the tubesheets using stainless wire and argon gas. This caused me a lot of headaches as a small weld splatter BB lodged in one of the tubes and I had a tough time finding it.
2) I used .018 monofilament instead of the .015 that Dr. Eaton used and wrapped about the same number of turns as shown in the pictures. I suspect the monofilament difference causes less flow up through the tubes, but I don't think it would make that much of a difference. I probably should change that out and go to the .015 filament and try again. I tried a test after flushing with distilled water and using distilled water only. I could get only a slight indication of current. I am amazed that only 1/2 gram would pull 60+ amps!
To be fair, I should probably get Jeff's book and all the info I can get before disounting this design.
