Help:How to Build a Profile Page for a Company or Technology

From PESWiki

There is also a simplified instructions page.

.

PESWiki focuses on renewable, affordable energy technology. If you know of a company or technology that should be listed here, we welcome you to build a page about it.

If you are a company executive or otherwise directly associated with the technology, you are in a prime position to know the technology well and represent it clearly and accurately. However, we request that you put on a journalist hat and use a neutral point of view in how you word things. Refrain from using such phrases as "we", but use "they" instead. Refrain from gushing endorsements such as "this is the best company in the world".

Following are some instructions and guidelines for building a feature page. If these are intimidating to you, or if you do not have time at present to build such a page, feel free to make a page recommendation to us through our submit (http://pureenergysystems.com/submit/index3.html) link.

Please glance through the content on this instruction page before proceeding, so you can get the lay of the land.

Table of contents

Building a Page

Make Sure There Isn't Already a Page About It

Use the "search" button in the upper left-hand corner of each page of this site to see if there is already a page about the company or technology.

Page Ownership and Control

Even though you might be the one who first creates a page, and who watches it closely and maintains it, that does not mean you "own" its content. This is a public website, with a "copyleft" philosophy.

Others may edit the page and may even post skeptical remarks about the company or technology. Rather than delete them, just post your rebuttal to them, providing documentation to support your response if possible. Sometimes it is appropriate to move the comment to a more suitable place, if it has been positioned obnoxiously.

In some cases, where a page is being abused, we will temporarily protect the page from being edited except by those with Sysop privileges. Such instances are very rare.

You will need to be logged in to make changes to the site.

Starting the Page

If the name of the company you want to feature is "Widgets LLC", then enter the following into your browser address bar: http://peswiki.com/index.php/Directory:Widgets_LLC

Note that the name of the company or technology follows the deparment word "Directory:"

Naming Guidelines

  • It is preferable to use the legal name of the company.
  • If it is a general technology, try to be as concise and descriptive as possible.
  • periods (.), commas (,), parenthesis (), and other symbols are usually permitted
  • Initial Caps is the Preferred Format for Page Names
  • See also Help:File Naming Guidelines

After you enter the name you want in the address bar, hit "enter", and you will be taken to a new page that says "(There is currently no text in this page)"

Click on the "edit" tab at the top of the page, and a box will open for you to enter content. You are ready to create your page.

When you are ready to save it, click on the "Show preview" button at the bottom of the box to see what it will look like. If it is acceptable, then click on "Save". Your page has now been created, and will be the newest entry on the Special:Newpages page.

Templates

You will find a template for a feature page here: Directory:Template

We also have a more simple template if you prefer.

Just click on the "edit" tab at the top of the page, copy that content (select then click ctrl-c), then paste (ctrl-v) it into your page.

Content Suggestions

A good feature page includes most, if not all of the following elements as much as possible and feasible. (These are included in the Directory:Template page)

  • Brief introduction/overview at the opening, sumarizing what the company or technology is about, how far along it is, what its applications are, and any major drawbacks. This can be anywhere from one sentence to 3-4 short paraphraphs.
  • Also in the opening, a short quote that captures an interesting facet of the company or technology.
  • Link to the official website, and key pages on the site
  • Latest Developments, with most recent first, hitting major milestones as they come along
  • Description of how it works
  • Key Images, Videos, Diagrams
  • Expected Costs of the technology in the marketplace
  • List of Key Advantages
  • List of Primary Applications
  • Independent Testing status
  • Patent(s) status
  • Profiles of the company and inventor
    • Stock Symbol, if relevant, with link to stock page
  • Coverage in the News, other websites
  • Discussion/comments section, including link to the discussion page, e.g. Talk:Directory:Widgets_LLC
  • Related Technologies, such as close competitors or other similar projects by the inventor
  • Contact information, of the company as well as your contact info as "Page Coordinator", if you don't mind. In parenthesis, mention your relationship to the company, with a link to your PESWiki profile page, e.g. User:yourusername
  • "See also" section that links to other PESWiki index pages of relevance.

Images

We like having at least one image to accompany each page on our site, to give people some kind of visual about the technology in discussion. The preferred spot is in the upper right-hand corner of the page, preferably 300 pixels wide, but not wider.

You will find the link for uploading images ("upload file") near the bottom of the left-hand navigation column.

See also: PESWiki:Uploading Images

Here is the format you will use to put the image in the upper right-hand corner, allowing the text to be located in the left part of the page. At the beginning of the edit box, enter

If you want a caption below the image, then use this format:

Example Pages

Here are a few sample Technology/Company directory pages that you might want to review to see their layout and organization.

Create a Bullet to link to the New Page from other PESWiki pages

Once you create the new page, and are ready to have people come flocking to it, the next step is to link to it from other PESWiki pages including:

Also let us know, and we can put a link to it from our navigation column under "Latest Additions", if it warrants such attention. Such a link shows up on every page at PESWiki.com.

The general bullet format is:

  • Energy Field Page Link(s) > Page Title - Ten-to-thirty-word desription, capturing the essence.

The image you use for this bullet should be of dimensions 95x95 pixels.

Sample Bullet

  • Fuel Efficiency > Retrofits / Additives > HAFC: Hydro Assist Fuel Cell kit - The HAFC kit presently for sale combines three fuel saving technologies along with a sophisticated computerized emission system optimizer. It includes 1) an electrolysis unit for on-board hydrogen injection; 2) a vaporizer/ionizer using magnets; and 3) additives that include acetone and xylene.

The code for that bullet looks like this:

*Fuel Efficiency >
Retrofits /
Additives >
HAFC: Hydro Assist Fuel Cell kit
- The HAFC kit presently for sale combines three fuel saving technologies
along with a sophisticated computerized emission system optimizer. It
includes 1) an electrolysis unit for on-board hydrogen injection; 2) a
vaporizer/ionizer using magnets; and 3) additives that include acetone
and xylene. <br style="clear:right;">

Top 100?

If you think the technology you are creating a featured page for is a viable contender for the Top 100 Clean Energy Technology classification by the New Energy Congress, you might want to post a section that addresses each of the ten criteria, which the NEC can then review.

An example of how to format/present this self-evaluation can be found here: Directory:Magnetic_Power_Inc#Self-Evaluation

Once the page is completed and ready for review by the New Energy Congress, use the submit (http://pureenergysystems.com/submit/index3.html) link, and list the PESWiki page url, along with your reason why you think it is a viable contender for such a distinction, in relation to the other technologies on that list. Such a determination is usually made within a week, unless those running the review process are distracted with other pressing tasks, often less.

If the technology is approved for Top 100 status, then a Top 100 tag can be added to the top of the page.

Page Management

Monitoring the Page

Each page at PESWiki has a "history" tab at the top of the page, which shows every change made to the page. You can view the page as it existed at any given time. You can also compare between any two revision versions. This is a good way to see who has done what on the page, and when.

Every page at PESWiki also has a "watch" option among the top tabs. Once you add a page to your watch list, all you need to do is click on the my watchlist link at the top of the site to be taken to a listing of a history of the pages you are watching. It will show you those pages that have been changed, by date.

As the company or technology has significant developments, feel free to update the page.

Moving the Page if Necessary

What I do in cases where the name of the company/product is not immediately apparent, is I use an email to draft the page. This way I can save it as I go. Then, once the company/product name is apparent, I save it down at PESWiki Directory:companyname

Even if I don't have all the information (e.g. official website, contact info), at least it is a start.

I pull together what I can find.

If it turns out I misnamed the page, I use the "move" tab to rename it, which
- changes the url
- creates a redirect from the previous location
- moves the page history and traffic count to the new location

Then I go to the old location and use the "what links here" tab (left column near bottom) to see what pages link to the old location, and I update those to link to the new location.
