On March 4, I interviewed Justin Church of JDCProducts.com to talk about what he is calling the H-Cat, an open source design he instigated that involves venting hydroxy or HHO gas -- un-ignited -- through a catalytic converter (the kind used in automobiles) -- in ambient conditions -- and generating significant heat in the process.
It could hardly get more simple than that -- and it probably involves LENR or cold fusion, as it is commonly called -- one of the most coveted genres of clean energy . . . now made accessible to the lay person worldwide. There's enough information here for you to begin experimenting and designing systems for sale.
For example, Justin recently sustained around 900 ºF (482 ºC) for nearly 8 hours using around 200 Watts to run his HHO device generating about 1 L per minute. He says it isn't hard to exceed the 1200 ºF limit of his meter, measuring the inside temperature.
As far as I can tell, this effect, which many others have already been replicating, can begin to be implemented now for making home heat systems. And, once the systems are refined, this effect could be used for generating electricity, whether through boilers or through going direct to electricity.
He says that due to the clean nuclear effect, due to the HHO reacting with the nano platinum and palladium embedded in the catalytic converter substrate, there is significantly more energy coming out in the form of heat than the energy required to make the HHO gas.
The cost for the off-the-shelf components would be around $800 dollars if you bought them at retail prices, but could be significantly less if used parts were utilized.
Justin said his motivation for doing this work is so he doesn’t have to pay for propane or electricity to heat his home, and to find a way to help humanity with this technology. He wants to see more people involved in testing, characterizing, optimizing, and developing this system which could revolutionize energy-making worldwide -- power to the people, finally.
Even if it turns out that this is not an LENR effect, the level of efficiency of watts:BTUs is likely to surpass anything presently available in the market.
- Open Challenge
- There are a lot of HHO generator companies out there. This would make for a great supplemental product for your customers. You should test your HHO gas in an H-Cat design and try to come up with a good design to sell as a heater for your customers. Who can make the best one?
- Key Question
- Can it be self-looped? If this really is LENR, you should be able to make enough electricity to power the HHO generator, notwithstanding the losses. More questions below.

- Brown's Gas will ignite when presented in a high enough concentration to an ignition source, whether flame or heat; and you are creating conditions of sufficient heat in the catalytic converter, so you have to be careful about HHO concentrations reaching that heat source.
- You should use some kind of insulation, such as ceramic insulation pads, between the incoming HHO and the catalytic converter.
- You don't want the HHO generator to begin to dry out (with input reservoir going dry), or you can get arcing between the plates, which can ignite the HHO gas. The first hazard is explosion, as the electrolyte level gets so low that the electricity starts arcing across the plate gap. Then, depending on the electrolyzer design, you may get meltdown, electrolyzer bursting and/or fire.
- If this in indeed LENR, you can expect transmutation and radiation, and should check for the same. So far, Justin and his associates have not detected any gamma or beta or alpha radiation; and they are in good health, notwithstanding having been around the effect for many hours.
- You will be dealing with significant heat and should use necessary precautions.
- Impurities in the catalytic converter can be released and inhaled. If you are going to be operating this indoors, you need to be sure to have a clean substrate in the catalytic converter.
- The electrical components involved in generating HHO gas can be dangerous if not properly handled.
- If you use a battery source, be aware of the cautions regarding battery handling: shock, acid exposure, gas leakage/accumulation.

- First crude test of the H-Cat concept. 13.8 volts DC @ 5 amps (69 Watts) Very promising and well worth further exploration by everyone. H-CAT? Catalytic Combustion of HHO / Hydroxy Yields Cold Fusion or LENR Effect?

The key components and operation principles are:
- Catalytic Converter (without nasties on it). Should be a new model in which nano-materials are utilized (approximately the past decade). (These range from free/used, to $50 new on the low end, to $300 with exhaust manifold [unnecessary here].)
- HHO gas generator (thousands of makes/models/plans available online worldwide; e.g. Justin sells them). (These range from $50 in parts to $2000 for high-end products.) And any operational supplemental material required, such as...
- Electrolyte (required in most HHO systems, but not all)
- Power source for HHO generator (battery, replenished by renewable power; or mains power supply), able to provide the proper volts/amps (Justin sells these too).
- Bubbler to place between the HHO generator and the catalytic converter. (Simple hardware, cheap to buy/build, maybe $20-75.)
- Ceramic insulation pads to place in and fill the opening of catalytic converter to both diffuse the incoming HHO gas and to insulate the HHO nozzle from ignition from the heat being generated in the catalytic converter matrix. (Include from 10 to 30 of the ¼-inch thickness size. Found at http://McMaster.com or any welding shop. Part number 93435K41: 1/4" thick x 36" wide: $18.16/foot)
- A way to efficiently extract the heat from the catalytic converter.
- A way to prevent water build-up in the matrix (e.g. simple vibration, possibly even from the bubbling of the HHO gas generator tank)
- A way to collect the water from the catalytic converter (to recycle back into the HHO unit).
- Bear in mind that HHO gas is lighter than air, so the natural direction of flow is upward.
Criteria for "Best"
In this contest to see who can come up with the best design, the following criteria should be met:
- Great (retail price)/(watt input)/(BTU produced) ["$/w/b"] (lowest wins)
- Build at least ten prototype commercial systems
We will be looking to recognize the following achievements, and hopefully will be able to award some substantial prizes for these accomplishments:
The best in these categories each 6 months (January/July), which are commercially available (meaning at least ten prototype commercial systems have been built):

- Best scientific evaluation of the process (proper calorimetry, HHO species characterization/effect, nuclear detection, methodology)

- Best portable device (light-weight, high power density, practical, useful, attractive, affordable)

- Largest [e.g. power plant] (in terms of total BTU or electricity output)
- Smallest [e.g. cell phone] (in terms of total BTU or electricity output)

- What are the crucial ingredients?
- What metals are embedded in catlytic converters, in what proportion? How much diversity is there from one brand to the next? Are they always nano? What ratio of nano:non-nano?
- Which nano metals work best?
- What is the functional duration of the catalytic converter?
- How could the catalytic converter be redesigned to optimize this effect?
- What is the best way to pass water or oil through the internal portion for the heat exchanger process?
- What is the best way to fasten the HHO gas to the catalytic converter (e.g. male/female connector set-up that is resistant to heat)
- Might the safety increase by supplementing the incoming HHO with air?
- Might the overall efficiency increase by supplementing the incoming HHO with air?
- How hot can this system safely get?
- What is the best way to describe the efficiency of the system? E.g. Watts-in / BTUs-radiated
- How can the heat from the catalytic converter be efficiently radiated?
- What is the gas-flow-rate to catalytic converter size relationship? Is it linear?
- Are there any safety/certification requirements for this type of appliance that must be met?
- What is a safe rate of HHO gas flow before ignition can happen within the catalytic converter?
- !!! What would happen if ignition of the gas took place within the lattice of the catalytic converter? !!!
- What are the best nano-materials to embed in the catalytic converter ceramic matrix? E.g. platinum, palladium, nickel
- What are the most cost-effective?
- What is the most effective concentration of nano-materials embedded in the matrix?
- What is the LENR reaction that takes place? Is it LENR?
- What is the most effective kind of HHO? Ortho, para, iHHO, etc.
- What is the most cost-effective way to generate the most effective kind of HHO?
These questions ought to stimulate a few engineers and scientists!

- One caution that you might want to list on the new H-CAT page is about allowing 'air' into the process, IF the outlet is allowed to 'exhaust' into living space, and IF the catalytic process is not well controlled.
- Our atmosphere is made up of mostly what? Nitrogen, 78%, and 21% Oxygen. When those two components are exposed together at high temperatures, bad stuff results... NOx - very bad stuff.
- Unless the experimenter can absolutely guarantee that not even a single point in the core exceeds 2800°F, they should exhaust outdoors... possibly using an old turbocharger air-to-air intercooler with a small fan blowing across it as an exhaust heat extraction device.
- The auto-igniton temperature of Hydrogen is far below the NOx formation point, 'only' 997°F, so the only way you can reach 2800° is if the some point in the core is allowed to reach 997°, then the temperature will rise very rapidly, as will the emissions of NOx.
- The ideal core temperature will (should!) likely be FAR less... probably in the 300-500°F range... so the comments about filling the inlet with ceramic filter material is very important to avoid hot-spotting in the core. Using a temperature probe directly in the path of the core outlet would help monitor this.
Mark Coffman responds:
- One thing I came up with...if the top of the converter is sealed with only HHO coming into the top pipe under positive pressure and lets say the bottom converter pipe is sealed under some water then the air (the only thing with nitrogen) will be sealed out and purged. The HHO pressure will purge the air from the converter before the reaction gets going therefore no NOx problem.
Bear in mind that air convenction is a very inefficient way to transmit heat. Early designs, prior to re-engineering of the catalytic converter itself, should focus on having the exterior aluminum heat sink dump the energy into an external heat exchanger (passing through the aluminum heat sink....
- HHO torch igniter
- Put the catalyzer substrate on the inside of an HHO torch so you don't need an igniter. As the gas passes the substrate, it will immediately get hot and ignite the gas, if the flow rate is sufficient. (Justin Church's idea; March 10, 2014)

Wall mount catalytic heater

- You certainly should not put a used automotive catalytic converter into use this way. The poisons trapped in the matrix would be liberated. A new one may be expensive unless it is from overstock or obsolete.
- What about using a readily available wall mount catalytic heater designed for home use. They are designed to use with propane or natural gas and work great with pure hydrogen. I have not tried one with HHO. They come with plumbing for the fuel, thermostats, piezoelectric spark lighters, and are UL approved.
- The only part missing from the diagram then, is a pressure regulator.

- Yes, I'd have to find the link but a gentleman has already tried this with hho. It works but has to be modified since its meant for higher pressure lp. He had to completely take it apart remove lp valve system and inject the gas directly into the catalytic base. He said it took a while to activate and heat up but once it did, it kept rising in temp. He didn't have flashback protection so he didn't run it long. I have yet to get my hands on one of them to test it myself but the propane pressure valves and regulators are going to have to be bypassed.
