<< An X Prize Contender >>

Valentin Technologies' "130 MPG Car" is a medium size 5-seat passenger car, driven by a Hydrostatic Powertrain. The free-piston internal combustion engine pumps hydraulic fluid into the accumulator that drives the wheelmotors in each wheel. The wheelmotors are reversed during braking and become pumps to recuperate the entire braking energy.

It is an official contender for the Automotive X-Prize. Furthermore, after inspecting the other contenders, Ingo Valentin believes that his design has the best chance of winning that competition.

How it Works

Quoting from http://www.valentintechnologies.com/how-it-works/default.asp

The piston of the free-piston internal combustion engine pumps hydraulic fluid into the accumulator. It stores the energy by compressing the gas bladder inside. The engine will be turned off automatically when the accumulator is filled – and turned on again shortly before it becomes empty.

The pressurized fluid drives the wheelmotors, one in each wheel. Their driving power is continuously variable from zero to maximum speed.

The wheelmotors are reversed during braking and become pumps. They are powerful enough to stop the car like disk brakes, while recuperating the entire braking energy. The energy is stored in the accumulator and used again for driving. The ‘round-trip-efficiency’ during braking is 70% to 85%. The energy is stored in the accumulator and will be used again to drive the car.

The powertrain computer controls the charging and braking process, and also its free capacity to store the entire braking energy.

They have a lot of things right

I like the technology behind this car. Hydraulic hybid additions to UPS trucks have already proven to be more efficient that electric hybrid technology. Free piston technology is great and their concept of ultra high pressure fine spray multi injector injection is about as close to homogenous charge as you can get.
