Fuel Cells

  • Fuel Cells / Waste to Energy > from Sewage > NEW: Urine Power >
Urine-powered fuel cells by Youtricity - The Carbamide Power System prototype can break urea or urine from humans or animals down into water, nitrogen and CO2, and also produce electricity at the same time, using a cheaper catalyst and less expensive membranes, without requiring precioius metals like platinum. (Yahoo News; Aug. 27, 2010) (Also: Discovery)

Batteries

  • Taiwanese Chlorophyll Battery - Works With Any Liquid! - Chungpin Hovering Liao from Graduate School of Electro-Optic and Material Science of National Formosa University in central Taiwan discovered a battery that he claims to be the world’s first chlorophyll organic battery. He says his battery can be filled up with almost anything, including water and urine, and it can provide electricity from two to seven days. (GreenOptimistic; Nov. 1, 2008)
  • Pee Powered Battery - Scientists soaked a piece of paper in a solution of copper chloride, sandwiched it between strips of magnesium and copper and laminated it in plastic. When a drop of urine is added to the paper through a slit in the plastic, a chemical reaction takes place that produces about 1.5 volts of electricity, the same as a standard AA battery, for about 90 minutes. (TreeHugger; Mar. 1, 2007)
  • Urine-Powered Battery - Singapore physicists create first paper battery that generates electricity from urine. Technology is an ideal match for cheap, disposable healthcare test-kits. (PESN; Aug. 16, 2005)

Hydrogen

  • Featured: Waste to Energy > from Sewage > Urine >
Urine-Powered Generator from Nigeria - Four teenage girls have invented and demonstrated at the fourth annual Maker Faire Africa a generator powered by urine. "What these kids are doing is taking urea electrolysis and making hydrogen and then using that hydrogen to make electricity", according to Gerardine Botte, a chemical engineer at Ohio University who invented the urea electrolysis process. (PESWiki; November 10, 2012)
  • Waste to Energy > Sewage > Urine / Hydrogen > Production >
Pee power could fuel hydrogen cars - Ohio University’s Gerardine Botte has invented a way to create hydrogen fuel from urine. Ammonia and urea, two compounds found in urine, are also a source for hydrogen. Placing an electrode in the wastewater and applying a current creates hydrogen gas. (Huffington Post; March 15, 2011)

Other

  • Directory:GEET Reactor by Paul Pantone - an engine with a GEET can allegedly run on all kind of “crazy” fuels, including water, urine, coke, waste oil, etc. All of these are merely turned into the same end product — syngas, which burns great in the engine.
  • Your Car and Home Could Soon Be Powered By Urine - The Ohio University scientists who developed the urine technology found that attaching hydrogen to nitrogen in urine allowed it to be stored without the strict requirements of ordinary hydrogen, and allowed it to be released with less electricity (0.037 volts versus 1.23 volts needed for water). (Mercola; July 28, 2009)
  • Producing hydrogen from urine - You do two things at motorway services: fill up one tank and empty another. US chemists have combined refuelling your car and relieving yourself by creating a new catalyst that can extract hydrogen from urine. (PhysOrg; July 3, 2009)
