  • 'Small' research at MSU leads to advances in energy, electronics - A Michigan State University researcher and his students have developed a nanomaterial that makes plastic stiffer, lighter and stronger and could result in more fuel-efficient airplanes and cars as well as more durable medical and sports equipment.   • ABC Technology - Focuses on supplying Global Solutions composed of all in-house technologies and

manufacturing processes: Coilwinding, Component assembly, Plastic injection, Molding and overmolding.

  • How to Make Super-Strong, Super-Flexible Metals - Researchers at Caltech are pioneering new ways to make superstrong metals that are twice as tough as titanium, and twice as elastic. These "metallic glass" composites are so strong a 3mm rod can support a 2-ton truck and they bend instead of snapping like most other metals of their kind, which are called "glass metals."   • Working Model 2d - Mechanical simulation program for making devices virtually then seeing how they work. Movies can be exported to AVI format. Pricey at $4000 US, after 30-day evaluation. (Thanks Eric Vogels)
  • Electric Power Plant Design (PDF) - 135-page manual by the Army Corps of Engineers could come in handy as a reference for those of you contemplating utility-scale designs and costs. Covers several sizes and types, the largest of which is 30,000 kW. (USACE; Jan. 20, 1984)
  • eMachineShop - These guys can make darn near anything, and can do it in nearly any material you'd like, at a reasonable cost. And they provide a free CAD package to do it in. Other exotic resources mentioned. (PESWiki)
  • Cold Weld: Magnetic Pulse Welding - Process developed by Pulsar Ltd., Israel, does not use heat but uses a ultra short magnetic pulses. Advantages: Can weld aluminum to steel, nickel to titanium. "Cold fusion between metals." Takes 1/100,000ths of a second to weld. Single micron precision possible. Single system capable of welding one million parts per year.   • Photo Molecules Flip Current - Many labs are working to make electronic components from molecules. Such small electronics would be faster and more powerful than today's versions. Now, researchers have made an electronic light detector from peptide molecules. (MIT Technology Review; Sept. 21, 2004)

  • Ultracapacitor Technology Breakthrough - Technology breakthrough enables BOOSTCAP cells and multi-cell modules to store more energy and deliver more power per unit volume and last longer than any other commercially available ultracapacitor products. (ZPEnergy; June 8, 2005)
