Directory of hybrid electric vehicles and resources, in which an internal combustion or other engine runs a generator, which runs an electric motor to propel the vehicle.

Technologies

  • Wheel Motors to Drive Dutch Buses - A Netherland company, e-Traction, has developed a series hybrid bus. A diesel generator charges a battery, which in turn supplies electricity for two motors, one in each rear wheel, yielding a 2x increase in mileage. (MIT Technology Review; March 23, 2009)
  • FEV Hybrid Technology (Part 1) - Raser Technologies, Inc., in conjunction with its systems integration partner, FEV, unveiled components of a new advanced extended-range plug-in series hybrid electric vehicle powertrain and integrated drive system designed for full-size SUVs and pickup trucks. (Engineering TV; July 7, 2008)
    • FEV Hybrid Technology (Part 2) - Mahindra & Mahindra, one of the leading auto manufacturers in the Indian market, and FEV, a leading developer of advanced powertrain and vehicle technologies, developed a diesel-electric hybrid version of the Scorpio SUV. FEV contributed its expertise in hybrid powertrain systems development and integration, as well as software development to support Mahindra in the hybridization of the vehicle, the first of its kind to be marketed in the Asian market. (Engineering TV; July 7, 2008)
  • US Army Unveils Hybrid-Electric Propulsion - The U.S. Army recently unveiled a new hybrid-electric propulsion system for use in a new line of manned ground vehicles. The unique feature is that the traditional engine has been decoupled from the drive train and is used only to recharge the battery and power other systems within the vehicle. (New Launches; Aug. 18, 2007) (See Slashdot discussion)
  • Connaught Motor Company - Connaught's hybrid Type-D high performance energy-efficient sports car will deliver 140mph, 0-60mph in 6.5s, 42mpg, while still complying with ultra-low emissions targets. The Lynch electric motor is attached to the crankshaft nose, via a variable gearing system designed to exploit the fact that an electric motor delivers its highest torque at its lowest speeds.
  • 60 MPG Hybrid Hummer - SAE Energy is converting a 2005 Hummer H3 to a series hybrid powered by a biodiesel turbine engine that charges a set of super capacitors in a matter of seconds, giving the car 600 horse power. Johnathan Goodwin says "it'll get 60 miles to the gallon and does zero to 60 in five seconds!" (AutoblogGreen; Oct. 20, 2007)
