Raser is a leader in rapidly developing cost-effective geothermal resources. They are able to harness lower-heat input (200 - 300 degrees F) compared to usual flash-to-steam geothermal processes. In Nov. 2008 they completed their first plant, with power purchase agreement for 7.8 cents per kilowatt-hour, which is nearly twice the cost of the cheapest wind farms. However, unlike wind or solar, geothermal is capable of base-load power production, providing a constant output, 24/7/365.

Instead of using electricity to turn a heat pump to cool a liquid, Raser runs a warmed liquid through a heat pump to generate electricity.

With their rapid, low-cost deployment capability, they could maximize the U.S. geothermal capacity within ten years, if assisted by other companies, to harness the 100 Gigawatts available. By themselves, their business plan sets forth an ambitious roll-out schedule to achieve 1,000 Megawatts by the end of ten years.

Raser is also a leader in developing motors for the electric vehicle industry, which augments the geothermal technology that produces base-load power at a constant output 24/7. The plug-in electric vehicles can utilize the electricity produced through the night.

How it Works

"Their approach is ingenious. Part of their success comes from the principle of mass producing well-established, off-the-shelf (from United Technologies Corp.), modular components.

They also have an edge because of their concept of taking the air conditioning industry technology and essentially running it in reverse. Instead of using electricity to turn a heat pump to cool a liquid, they run a warm liquid through a heat pump to generate electricity.

The secondary liquid that is heated through a heat exchanger from the geothermal-heated water has a boiling temperature of around 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Converting that proprietary fluid to vapor is what turns the generator (heat pump). In this "reverse" direction from the air conditioner, turbines replace the impeller of the heat pump.

This enables Raser to use much lower temperatures than what traditional geothermal plants have required in which water is flashed to steam and run through a turbine. At normal atmospheric pressure, water boils at 212ºF, but under pressure -- typical of a geothermal system -- the temperature can go much higher before flashing to steam. Typical plants require the temperature to be at least 360ºF to be feasible.
