Vehicles
- Natural Gas Vehicle Cooperative launches in three western states - The newly-formed Natural Gas Vehicle Purchasing Cooperative (NGV Co-Op), started by CALSTART and operational in three states (Arizona, Nevada and California), will help fleet managers "to quickly identify, locate, and purchase a wide range of light, medium, and select heavy-duty natural gas vehicles at the best prices." (AutoBlog Green; June 26, 2008)
- Fill Up Civic GX at Home - Honda Civic GX, awarded "America's Greenest Car", runs on clean, domestic natural gas. The Phill home refueling unit hooks into the home natural gas supply, and pressurizes it for fuelling the vehicle, taking 16 hours when empty, giving a 220-250 mile range. (Honda)
Distributed Power
- Smart Grid >
Distributed Natural Gas Power - VW plans to put thousands of workers on the assembly line to make home-sized natural gas furnace/hot water heater/generators. These generators, based on a natural gas engine already used in the Golf, are 92 percent efficient (because they can use the waste heat for heating water or homes) and can either produce electricity for home use or put it out on the grid. (The Atlantic; Sep 17, 2009) (Thanks Phil Vogel) (P2P Comments)
Clean Energy Plants
- Natural Gas to Gasoline - Synfuels International, says that the process uses fewer steps and is far more efficient than more established techniques based on the Fischer-Tropsch process that converts natural gas into syngas, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide; a catalyst then causes the carbon and hydrogen to reconnect in new compounds, such as alcohols and fuels. (MIT Technology Review; August 15, 2008)
- Billionaire Texas oilman spend $58m on alternative energy campaign - The Pickens Plan, as the 80-year old has dubbed his effort, would involve an estimated $1 trillion government investment to substitute wind for the 22% of US electricity now derived from natural gas. (The Guardian; July 9, 2008)
- Clean Energy Systems Kimberlina Power Plant Test Facility - Making "Power without Pollution" with zero emission power plants (ZEPP), the system utilizes the oxy-fuel combustion process with existing power turbine technology and provides full CO2 sequestration when using natural gas, syngas from coal, refinery residues, landfill gas, bio-digester gases, and renewable fuels such as glycerin from bio-diesel production facilities. Processing
- New Way to Tap Natural Gas May Expand Global Supplies - A new technique that taps previously inaccessible supplies of natural gas from shale in the United States is spreading to the rest of the world, raising hopes of a huge expansion in global reserves of the cleanest fossil fuel. (NY Times; Oct. 9, 2009)
- Newpoint Gas - Newpoint Gas has begun to dominate the natural gas treating industry with its standardized conceptual amine plants, aptly dubbed, "EXL-TREAT".
Trends
- Could Cowpower Replace Horsepower On The Rally Circuit? - Cow manure is a leading contributor of nitrous oxide and ammonia into the atmosphere, adding heartily to global warming. Cars provide their own fair share of noxious fumes. But a British team of engineers and racers is working on a way to kill two birds with one stone by developing a race car that can run on cow manure. (Gas 2.0; Oct. 13, 2009)
- Natural-gas vehicles hot in Utah, where the fuel is cheap - Troy Anderson was at the gas pump and couldn't have been happier, filling up at a rate of $5 per tank. Anderson was paying 63.8 cents per gallon equivalent for compressed natural gas, making Utah a hot market for vehicles that run on the fuel. ('Physorg; April 25, 2008)
Government and Politics
- Paying more at the pump - The Utah Public Service Commission's recent decision to increase the price of compressed natural gas for vehicles has drawn the ire of many alternative-fuel advocates, including former Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson. (Deseret News; Jan. 4, 2008)
Research and Development
- CO2 Sequestration >
New Way to Convert CO2 into Methanol - Scientists at the Singapore-based Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN) have achieved an unparalleled feat by transforming carbon dioxide into methanol. Methanol (natural gas) is a widely used form of industrial feedstock and clean-burning biofuel. (Alternative Energy blog; April 28, 2009)
- Clean Coal >
Fuel from Coal-Eating Microbes - As little as one-hundredth of 1 percent of the coal in the United States converted into methane by microbes would supply the country's current annual natural-gas demands, says Andrew Scott, former professor, and founder of Altuda Energy Corporation. (MIT Technology Review; Jan. 9, 2009)

Transonic Combustion's TSCi™ process boosts fuel efficiency by 50-75% - Transonic Combustion, a finalist in ARPA-E's Energy Innovation summit, has a proprietary process that involves a catalyst and bringing the fuel to the "supercritical state" prior to injection into the cylinders, so that no droplets remain, and essentially all the fuel is burned, not wasting any, while also reducing emissions.
