Ultra Efficient Electromagnetic Motor
New motor design poised to revolutionize the motor industry
On Oct. 15, 2008, New Energy Congress member, Sterling D. Allan traveled to see Millennial Motors, Inc. The following is his report.
Millennial Motors of Brigham City, Utah, USA, led by Denis Palmer, claims to have come up with a motor that puts out far more torque per input energy than conventional motors. Their coils are ultra simple to wind, and are arranged in removable, modular nodes. Because their design eliminates more than 95% of the iron from the motor, they are able to capture nearly all of the collapsing electromagnetic fields into a capacitor to be used again in the next pulse. "The efficiency jumps through the roof," says Palmer.
I saw a crude version of their motor in rotation, though not with any instrumentation attached.
The circuitry to properly control the modules and the system has been one of the largest challenges for the company; something they are confident they have nearly mastered.
Under normal operation, the motor does not heat up. Thus, one of the primary advantages of the motor is that it can be made out of plastic. Almost all the input energy goes toward rotation.
While conventional motors typically don't reach their optimal efficiency until they reach higher speeds, and are prone to burn out during loaded start-up or in the case of overspeed, the Millennial motor jumps up to its optimal performance even at low speeds, and maintains that high efficiency all the way up through its highest speed.
Due to the simplicity of the design, and due to cheaper materials (mostly plastic), the Millennial motor can be manufactured at a much lower cost.
In their prototype development and testing, the company is presently focused on transportation applications, including retrofits that can fit in the transmission chamber, which are capable of powering vehicles, from small cars up to 18-wheeler semi trailer trucks. Another approach will be to replace the engine with a Millennial motor of much smaller size and weight. They also have a wheel hub design, and they're working on a drive train retrofit for city busses, to turn them into hybrid electric vehicles.
They are retrofitting a electric vehicle that holds the land speed record to go even faster. I saw the vehicle being fitted with their motor.
With some design changes, the system can also run in reverse to serve as a generator from an torque input source.
The company has also engineered a simple transmission to go with the motor.
They have a production prototype wheel hub design for a contract; and they are looking for funding (~$5 mil USD) to complete a production prototype for the other transportation applications.
Millennial Motors, Inc. is a research and development company which plans to license out the manufacturing and marketing of the myriad of applications open to the them.
Once enough motors are in circulation, Palmer envisions then introducing and upgrade that will provide surprisingly better performance, on a system that was already cost-competitive.

Oct. 9, 2008
Company claims that the output of their coils has increased 6x. Coils run cool all the time now. A commercial wheel hub prototype is ready. Transmission has been added. Prototypes have run 30+ days with no problems. Third party testing under way.
Another person who has been investigating the company and their claims said: "Their problems with the [circuit] boards is not over. They may be close but they are not out of the woods yet."
Due to an internal problem, they recently had a changeover in management.

We do not have an exact date that the prototypes will be unveiled as yet. Electronic design does not lend itself well to deadlines. We are hoping for late summer.

The following report by Sterling D. Allan is from a phone conversation he had with Denis Palmer.
He said that for 100W in, they're getting around 1 HP out (which is still above the 746 W / HP supposed limit). He did not give me reason to believe that they have rigorously measured this.
He said that they recently got a dyno for verifiable testing.
In a typical motor, when the load goes up, making the rpm go down, the current goes up. He said that in their motor, when you load the motor, the current goes down. He said that this aspect alone was what they were pursuing right now, with the idea that such a motor would have greatly increased life.
I told him that the Bedini SG I built does that, but that doesn't mean it's something that is going to be viable in the marketplace. It's just a function of the circuit. There's no torque in the Bedini SG.
The real question is how much "work" is done at the lower rpm, not now much current is drawn.
He said that a PE (?) from Red Engineering (?) who inspected it said that they were way out ahead of others and were accomplishing what others only wish they could accomplish.
I said that the video that is on their site shows a vehicle going maybe 2-5 mph. "That's not going to be impressing very many people."
He said, "That's why we're not making that video public."
I'm not sure what he was hoping to accomplish by releasing it privately.
He said that they were going to be having some people from "the university" testing it.
He also mentioned some of the things they have yet to address to make it stable. He expected that it would be another 3-6 months before it is ready for our examination and public scrutiny.

I have had a small setback in the time for the first demonstration. We have decided to get some certified tests completed before the demonstration, but the module design is almost completed. So the tests can be on the final production unit.
I was hoping to have this demo early this month but at this time it will probably be the end of July or possibly the first of August.
I will let you know as soon as we have a firm date.

The method of operation and its design are not able to be presented at this time. We are waiting for the application approval from the patent office. There are a few items that make this motor unique that I will tell you, but further disclosure will have to be after approval by our patent attourney.
This motor has the unique ability to be efficient over a wider range of loads -- [more] than any other.
For example, a motor with design output of 100 [error] horsepower operates in a highly efficient manner, with a 100 watt input. Most electric motors require a high level of power to start. This motor starts with a low power supply, and its efficiency is not affected by low power input levels.
This motor is less expensive to manufacture than other motors of same output.
This motor has no (or little) inrush current; stall current is low; it will not heat up the motor and stalling the motor.
This motor operates over the extreme RPM range of 0 to 10,000 rpm without excess power draw, and without producing excess heat.
This motor is lightweight, and has many features including sizing for most any application.
Size per horsepower is better than other motors and engines.
Cost
The company is planning a $15,000 (estimate) retrofit to replace rear-wheel drive vehicle's engines with the Magnetronic motor, which -- according to company predictions -- will give the vehicle a range of 500 miles per charge. Another cost to consider is that the retrofit will void any warranties.
Denis Palmer, the inventor, estimates that a two year return on investment could be had for anyone who meets or exceeds roughly 200 miles per day, with fuel costing around $2.50 per gallon, on a vehicle that gets 25 mpg. The 38-volt battery system will take about four hours to recharge.
On Oct. 9, 2008, Palmer said that their break-even point is 50 kW. Anything larger than that, and they can compete with the present market even with one-off production. But lower than 50kW and they will need to go into mass production to bring down price far enough to compete in the marketplace.

Denis has been working on the technology off and on for 30 years with several other individuals. In that time, they built around twenty prototypes, and are presently putting the finishing touches on a production prototype, which they plan to introduce first to distributors, which they are beginning to sign up.
