Liquid Metal retains a scratch-free surface longer than competing materials, while still being made in complex shapes. The same qualities lend it to be used as protective coatings for industrial machinery, including oil drill pipes and power plant boiler tubes.
- In the 21st Century, scientists at Caltech and Liquidmetal® Technologies developed a technology where metals behave similar to plastics. This new class of alloys is called Liquidmetal, due to its amorphous or liquid atomic structure. Rather than changing the atomic structure from a liquid state to a crystalline state, Liquidmetal® alloys gradually increase their viscosity as the temperature decreases. All other metals are either in a solid or liquid state depending on the temperature.
The Bessemer Process and plastics technology dramatically improved the cost paradigm of their day, but only Liquidmetal alloys redefine the cost and strength paradigm simultaneously.

- How to Make Super-Strong, Super-Flexible Metals (http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/multimedia/2008/05/gallery_glass_metal) - Researchers at Caltech (http://mr.caltech.edu/media/Press_Releases/PR13110.html) are pioneering new ways to make superstrong metals that are twice as tough as titanium, and twice as elastic. These "metallic glass" composites are so strong a 3mm rod can support a 2-ton truck and they bend instead of snapping like most other metals of their kind, which are called "glass metals."
