Hydron Collider at CERN

A giant particle accelerator near Geneva at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) -- built over the past 14 years, with a 17-mile circumference, at a cost of $8 billion -- is expected to begin experimental runs in the summer of 2008.

The objective is to explore phenomenon thought to be involved in the origins of the universe.

A lawsuit filed in U.S. federal court during last week of March alleges that the experiment could open up a black hole that instantly consumes the entire planet, and possibly much more. "Compression of the two atoms colliding together at nearly light speed will cause an irreversible implosion, forming a miniature version of a giant black hole."

Researchers will sift the debris from these primordial recreations for clues to the nature of mass and new forces and symmetries of nature. Only the experimentation may be stopped.
