Fuel efficiency is amount of work obtained for a quantity of fuel as compared to the energy content of the fuel; efficiency specifically considers wasted energy. In autos, fuel efficiency retrofits allow a MPG increase by enhancing the combustion efficiency and speeding up the burn rate; more of the carbon fuel is undergoing a complete combustion at a raster rate, therefore by the time the combustion gases are ready to exit the exhaust valves, the gases have slightly more time to cool than with un-enhanced carbon fuel. The most noticeable effect of fuel enhancement is a practical elimination of CO emissions, and a slight increase in the immediate CO2 emission; because there is a significant reduction in net carbon fuel requirements, there is an associated NET reduction in CO2 emissions considering the immediate effects!

A marketplace is quickly growing for electrolytic retrofit technologies, among other concepts.

There are many aftermarket retrofit designs, are are currently being sold as "fuel saving devices". Some have a negligible or even harmful effects on fuel efficiency. Others can be beneficial and boost efficiency. Fuel additives are materials which are added to the fuel include tin, magnesium and platinum compounds. The claimed purpose of these devices is generally to improve the energy density of the fuel by virtue of the materials added. Magnets attached to fuel lines have been claimed to improve fuel economy by aligning fuel molecules. Vapour transfer devices claim to improve fuel efficiency by changing the way that liquid fuel converts to fuel vapour. These include "Swirlers" to increase turbulence in the intake manifold and heaters Lean-burn devices change the air-fuel ratio to lean-burn, an engine can increase its fuel efficiency. The main drawback of lean burning is that it greatly increases an engine's pollutant emissions of oxides of nitrogen (NOx). Friction reducing measures reduces fuel consumption. Hardened silicon tires have lower rolling resistance than standard rubber tires. The typical lubricating oil used in engines has decreased in viscosity over the years. However, using a lubricant with lower viscosity than the lubricant specified by a vehicle manufacturer may damage an engine.

Requirements of Gas Mileage Increase

It is not the addition of a fuel enhancer that increases gas mileage. Gas mileage improvement is the direct result of injecting less fuel into the cylinders. Therefore after the addition of a fuel enhancer, the ECU or the carburetor must be adjusted according to the degree of fuel enhancement. If exhaust gas analysis equipment is not available to maximize results, slight air/fuel augmentation can be done by offsetting the Oxygen sensor signal or slightly leaning the carburetor manual adjustments. If exhaust gas analysis equipment is available, optimal results will be achieved by re-flashing custom fuel maps into an ECU or adjusting the carburetor precisely according to the data. This procedure is more difficult and typically requires a custom ECU or a chip with a computer interface, but none the less substantial fuel savings can be achieved simply by offsetting the Oxygen sensor signal or minor tweaks to the carburetor!

Dearth of financing stalls inventor of 110-mpg engine - A year ago, hundreds of people flocked to a 100,000-square-foot former factory building in Wauseon's industrial area where a Napoleon, Ohio, inventor promised to begin building engines that would travel more than 110 miles on a gallon of E85 gasoline. But time and the economy have not been kind to Doug Pelmear's plan to revolutionize the American automobile. (Toledo Blade; May 28, 2010)
  • Man claims fuel system gets 463 miles per gallon - John Weston's 1992 Geo Storm has an air vapor flow system where instead of liquid fuel, only vapors go to the engine. The system burns cleaner and based on a one-time test, "It came up to 463 miles a gallon" said Weston. (NBC2 News Online; July 7, 2008)
  • Fuel-saving find - Ernie Brookins’ hybrid hydraulic transmission drive system captures, compresses, and stores “wasted? drive-train energy produced when a vehicle’s engine is running. (In-Forum; May 24, 2008)
  • Hydristor to convert vehicles into green hybrids - This infinitely variable vane hydraulic pump/motor is basically a simplified automatic transmission with no gears, with regenerative storage capability. Aiming to retrofit existing vehicles, it is projected to double or even triple mileage, while drastically cutting emissions (to 1/4) and boosting performance.
  • Hydristor Vision Statement - Inventor, Tom Kasmer, shares an overview of his infinitely variable hydraulic pump technology for both improving fuel economy on vehicles, as well as integrated into a heat pump generator system for harvesting solar and other environmental heat differentials as a primary energy source.

  • Herman's Insight - Herman P. Anderson's is a hydrogen car retrofit will screw into the spark plug to convert any car to hydrogen, with water as source. Still being developed.
  • Running on Vapors: Tom Ogle's 100+ MPG Fuel System - A young inventor who died at age 26 in 1981, demonstrated an ultra high mileage system in 1977, later patented, that used the engine vacuum to draw fuel vapors from a vapor tank, obviating the need for a conventional carburetor and fuel pump.
  • McBurney Cracks the Code for Super-Carburetors - Inventor says the key is the catalytic cracking of the larger gasoline molecules into the dynamic combusting single-carbon molecules of methane and methanol, in the presence of heat, a catalyst, and water vapor. (see HIMAC Research)
  • Water-Fuel Generator Kit - links to technology give-away by inventor Carl Cella. "Modify your car to burn water."
  • W.Myers vaporizor system. Similar to GEET, but very high pressure -- needs work.
  • ALF Vaporizer System Manual Now Available - Complete instructions with drawings, photos, list of parts.
  • Vapor Fuel Technologies LLC: Fuel Vapor System - Vapor Fuel Technologies, LLC (VFT) has developed a system that increases fuel efficiency by over 30%. An independent test lab has verified these results. The VFT system is near production ready and will fit a major portion of light trucks and SUV s when complete.

Tools

  • ScanGauge II - Track your automobile statistics with ease. Unit plugs into the diagnostic connector found under-dash on 1996 and newer cars and light trucks.
  • Superchips MAX MicroTuner connects to the diagnostic connector inside your vehicle. In less than 10 minutes Superchips tunes the vehicle, giving the most power, the most torque, the best fuel efficiency and improved drivability.
  • auto FT Van Aaken SmartBox™ improves performance and fuel economy for turbo diesels. It simply plugs into your pump and gives you 15-40% more torque and horsepower. Mass market vehicle manufacturers have to presume that your diesel car will be run on the poorest quality fuel, will rarely if ever be serviced but will still run smoothly and pass emissions testing. So they set them up accordingly.
  • Tire pressure gauges - Under-inflated tires increase rolling resistance and decrease gas mileage.
  • Auterra Scan Tool - The Dyno-Scan kits connects to all 1996 and newer vehicles to obtain diagnostic information and measure vehicle performance.

Emergency Plane Landing - One of the funniest videos I've ever seen explores what happens when a passenger jet has to land on a freeway. Will the SUV hold up as makeshift front gear? Will the granny in the way survive? As for energy, this could go down as an exotic, albeit impractical retrofit for fuel efficiency. Note the mileage boost to the SUV. (YouTube; February 18, 2007)
