Validating Parallel Path
If you are skeptical about the ability of a central flux field in a core containing 3 flux fields, to have a disproportionate effect upon the magnetic force manifested in the arms of the core, then this can be verified with $10 of parts from the local hardware store, in about 5 minutes worth of work. There is no point debating the reality of something you can prove to yourself at such minimal time, effort, and expense!
Non electrical flux experiment
In the original Parallel Path egroup run from 2002-2004, GM proposed the following basic magnetic experiment. I performed it myself in an adapted form, using the apparatus illustrated below.
The numbers imposed on the image represent the number of steel stable strips the magnetic fields are capable of holding in place, and thus give you a good rough idea of the amount of comparative magnetic force manifested.
This simple approach will also help you to understand the concept of flux saturation in a practical sense i.e. you can feel and touch it. Simply add extra layers of steel staple strips, until there is insufficient force to hold another in place.
Parallel Path modification
The Parallel Path effect can be replicated with identical apparatus, at only a slight increase in cost and complexity, with the addition of a 3V DC variable power supply and enamelled copper wire. Once you have a feel for the magnetic force in the core, and an appropriate core depth, you may also wish to glue the staple strips together.
The end legs should be left loose unattached, at least initially, so you can tell exactly when one side of the core looses all flux density, and the PP effect has occurred. Note the precise input required to do that for the specific apparatus employed.
So simple
The inability of otherwise educated and rational people to go to the local hardware store, sit down, and perform a 5 minute $10 experiment, with no moving parts, or electrical input required, was/is consistently surprising. THE SIMPLEST WAY TO VALIDATE PP IS TO BUILD IT!
Parts list - maybe $10
- Steel staple strips from local hardware store (about $3)
- Magnets
- Half a brain (can be done with less)
Parallel Path parts
- Glue to hold staple strips together
- Enamelled wire
- Variable 3v DC PSU
- Half a brain (so as voltage input rises you can see the moment when one end of the flux path drops off the main core)
