The Energy by Motion (EBM) machine by Gamma Managers of Budapest, Hungary, is an electromagnetic motor design that allegedly produces more electricity than is required to run the motor.

Errata
A recent (Jan. 2008) report that the company allegedly has a working 10 MW (continuous, self-sustaining, usable) prototype that is ready to go commercial turns out to have been spurious.

Oct. 13, 2006 update -- NOT SELF-RUNNING YET: The company's present prototypes measure a small degree over unity, according to the measurement instruments and methods used. However, the extent of output exceeding input is not enough in the present prototypes to then cycle back to keep the unit running, as a self-runner. Any language expressing the self-running capability is extrapolative to a larger size, not yet built or proven, which allegedly has the necessary combination to keep the unit running and provide extra energy for use. (Source: Prof. Szabo, by phone to Sterling D. Allan.) Still true as of September 1, 2010 as far as I know. --Sterling D. Allan

Interview

Overview

Overview Statements by the Company and Its Representatives:

"The self-reliant EBM plant uses its own self-generated electromagnetic fuel. This technology is non-nuclear, 100 % environment friendly with zero emissions."
"We are routinely producing with our EBM Power Plants several kilowatts well over unity without any pollution and emissions whatsoever!"
"One of these 10-megawatt units [not yet built] will heat 280 houses and air-condition them, plus you have cheap power, guaranteed at six cents." [1]
"All that EBM needs to start it is a small motor or engine that produces torque (2.5% - 5% of rated output, depending on how quickly you want to start it up). If you're out where there's no power at all, you go to a local farmer and get a John Deere, hook on to it and start it up. Initially, it rotates the EBM drive unit, and it achieves operating speed. Its unique geometry allows extra shaft power to be produced as the rotor is rotated through the magnetic field. The shaft power is converted to electricity via a synchronous generator attached to the shaft of the EBM unit. A small quantity of the electricity is then fed back into the EBM unit to continue the rotation. The excess power produced can then be used or sold for profit. In other words, when we sell a 10-megawatt unit, it is actually producing 15-megawatts -- it will be the 15-megawatt generator. It will take between one and ten percent of the rated capacity (depending on size) back to drive the EBM motor, giving you 10 megawatts to feed into the grid 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The idea is to keep the flux alive." [2] [3] (With some editing on Oct. 11, 2006 from Prof. Szabo)

Watching the video, having interviewed Prof. Szabo a few days ago, I was thinking it was produced recently (last few months or weeks). The wording certainly is similar to their posture right now. I was therefore thrown for a loop when the year 2002 was mentioned at the end of the video as the expected date of completion of the first commercial unit. They were claiming back then the very thing they are claiming now -- four years later:

  • a larger size will be sufficient for self-running, with adequate energy left over for sale
  • such a unit is expected to be completed soon

Another disconnect is in their statement at the beginning of the 2002 video (which they are still claiming): that the technology is now "commercially ready."

My definition of "commercially ready" includes the necessary condition that a production prototype exists and has been rigorously tested to withstand the rigors of commercial use. They don't even have a working prototype (self-running, with adequate left over to sell), let alone a thoroughly tested production prototype.

On Oct. 18, 2006, New Energy Congress member, Andrew Michrowski, PhD, wrote:

There is another rationale for the [first] perceived "disconnect": lack of adequate capital.

To make a commercial size model takes a lot of money - just as it takes a lot of money to build a commercial sized dam, oil or gas-fired electrical generation facility. We shouldn't scoff at this: think of the xeroxmachine (photocopier): it took WWII and a frustrated "big shot" at the Joint Chief of States in Washington to build a "commercial" version after 11 years of waiting! Sometime similar happened to the first diesel engine to come through with a "commercial" unit.

Also, note that the company has come forward publicly only in the last few weeks - the videos were internal and available with NDAs. They were ready to manufacture (you can see the factory, the workers, the design) a commercial unit before - say 2002 - but would YOU if you had not sufficient money or orders? Not even NASA or the Pentagon builds anything without appropriated funds.

The following comment came from someone who attended the Vienna Free Energy Conference in Vienna, March 12-14, 2010.

My initial thoughts on EBM: In contrast to the many great presentations in Vienna, I was quite disappointed at Dr. Szabo’s performance. Most people (even some of the experts who went to see his big machine and sat through many of his presentations over the years) are still wondering what the EBM machine really does.

It apparently requires electrical input and claims to have electrical and heat output. But there are no reproducible measurements of OU and nobody knows exactly how much of the output is heat and how much is electric. What’s the point of this huge machine, if you need to place it next to a coal power plant to satisfy its huge electrical input? And even after so many years of OU claims, there is still no reliable evidence that the total output is higher than the input and if so by how much…

His presentation was light on technical explanations and full of economic comparisons between the EBM and other power generation technologies. But these comparisons were all terribly flawed with critical parameters missing (i.e. what are each of those technologies powered by, and what is the cost of that fuel/power source, what are the operating costs, etc…).

In general, I am very skeptical about everyone who invokes people’s interest with revolutionary claims and then charges a fee to any visitor who is interested in seeing the claim. Especially since paying visitors have no means of validating the claims on-site.

There are too many people in our field who make a comfortable living from fee-based ‘demos’ and we need more people focusing all their efforts on developing a true (and reproducible) breakthrough.

  • The power plant can be commissioned within a very short time after the order is placed.
  • With the inexpensive and clean EBM electric power, and heat energy, the production of hydrogen for fuel cells is highly competitive or the production of nitrogen for fertilizer, or desalination of sea water can be economically implemented.
  • With the torque produced by EBM Units, large ships or locomotives can be directly driven!

Description

Quoting from http://www.steorn.net/forum/comments.php?DiscussionID=19331&page=1#Item_0

"Energy-By-Motion is a renewable, clean and inexpensive energy resource, which utilizes magnetic flux as a fuel source and is now commercially viable. EBM is a uniquely configured rotating machine which can be used for simultaneous electrical and heat energy production using state-of-the-art commercial materials, such as laminated electro steel, copper windings, bearing, insulating materials shafts structural steel and so on similar in many ways to current large commercial motors or generators.
"This similarity ends, however, when one measures the combined electrical and heat output while being rotated through the EBM magnetic field. The unique geometry of the EBM machine appears to be responsible for its capability to produce energy out of the employed electromagnetic fields, such as fluxes which are present around and inside all "ordinary" permanent or electromagnets. The electrical power and heat energy that are produced from this process can be used in the traditional ways, as well as to manufacture hydrogen, desalinate sea water and to transport the same over large distances, to power and/or heat greenhouses, and so on. We feel this invention will encourage many new ways of utilizing renewable energy.
"EBM technology uses readily available materials and relies on existing manufacturing processes. It is non-nuclear, non-toxic, emits no noise or substances, and is 100% environmentally friendly. The energy is a function of the mass of inexpensive laminated steel in the unit. The larger the mass, the larger the output.
"The actual mechanism of the physics involved in this energy production is proprietary information."

Abstract of WO9318570
An asymmetrical, electro-mechanical device (10) comprises a geometrically-magnetically-asymmetrical stator (12) and a rotor (22) which move with respect to each other. There is a stator air gap (20) which makes the stator (12) asymmetrical. The magnetic flux passing from the rotor (22) to the stator (12) is interrupted when the rotor (22) passes by the stator air gap (20). The invention is able to achieve improvements over the prior art electro-mechanical devices, particularly in respect of efficiency.

Cost

quoting from http://www.gammamanager.com/index2.html

  • The average turn-key-cost of the EBM Power Plants is less than $2,000 USD/kW depending upon the MW size of the plant. This includes fuel for 40 years!
  • The average 1 kilowatt-hour electric power costs 75 % to 80 % of most local tariff rates at 65 % load factor (appx. 5,700 hours use per annum)
  • The pay-back period of invested capital is less than 4 years.

See: Market Value of Fuel Savings of Cogeneration EBM Power Plants

"The cost to produce electrical power using EBM technology is approximately 2 US. cents/kW-hr" [5]

History

The research and development work of this hi-tech technology began in 1980 in four laboratories in Toronto, Houston, London and in Budapest, managed for ELECTRO ERG LIMITED (EEL) by the GAMMA Group, under Professor L. I. Szabó's leadership. [8]

This is a Canadian invention. They spent 20 years in a building near the Toronto airport. At that time, a group in London, England, and, later on, a group in Budapest. [9]

Website created in March, 2006.

The team moved from Toronto and went to Budapest because the engineering cost is one third over there. They finished designing the unit over there. [10]
