The Blackle Debacle
Directory of technologies and resources relating to Computer Screen Energy Use.
Do we save or use more power when we use black as a background on a computer screen? If you still have a CRT display, then Blackle makes sense. If you use a flat-screen display, which has been the majority for a few years, the opposite effect takes place. Black on an LCD display uses more energy than when using a white background.

- Does a Darkened Google Really Save Electricity? (http://blogs.wsj.com/numbersguy/does-a-darkened-google-really-save-electricity-104/) - The savings are most likely to accrue from older CRT (cathode-ray tube) monitors, rather than the more-modern, more-compact, more-energy-efficient LCD (liquid crystal display) screens that have come to dominate the market (representing three quarters of all monitors world-wide as of last year, by some estimates). The law of unintended consequences kicks in. If you still have a CRT display, then Blackle makes sense. If you use a flat-screen display, the opposite effect takes place. Black on an LCD display uses more energy than when using a white background. Blackle is not a program. It is a website designed to get you to use in order to generate Google revenues for Heap Media in Australia.
