I put four Alkaline AA Rayovac Maximum Plus non-rechargeable batteries on a low current Bedini SG setting for four hours yesterday. They had been in a Leapster toy, which within a few days ago had been run until the batteries would not hold.

The individual voltages were around 1.26 v (in series: 5.01 volts)

I ran my Bedini SG with a 6V 12 Ah on front with a trickle charger for about the first hour of the four hours.

The base resistance was set at 1314 ohms, at which point the wheel was spinning at 71.9 rpm (16 magnets affixed to wheel).

The voltage almost immediately climbed to 5.28, and then gradually climbed from there in four hours to 5.23, at which point I terminated the charge (to run another experiment).

This morning, after about a 7 hour rest, they had dropped to 5.23 volts (series).

When I put them back in the toy, it lasted for about two minutes and then quit.

It seems to me from this experiment that while the batteries will take some charge, the charge does not "stick" and is basically useless.

I would dare guess that all alkalines will behave the same.

Paraphrasing from memory, John said: "You can't put the Zink back on the non-rechargeable alkaline plates. However, the rechargeable alkaline will work just fine."

I'm using the Bedini SG circuit and plans as defined in this project, and as reported in previous experiments.

  • Four Alkaline AA Rayovac Maximum Plus non-rechargeable batteries
  • Leapster electronic learning toy by Leap Frog (for load test).
  • One 6V Panasonic-BSG 4.2Ah/20h sealed lead acid batteries part number LC-R064R2P (http://www.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?PName?Name=P164-ND&Site=US) from Digikey.com.   • InteliTender 150-6 battery charger (to keep 6V input fully charged)
  • Multimeter by GB Instruments, GDT-11. Used to measure volts.
