How to format a bullet item for news or for a directory page here at PESWiki.

Here is the format that we've found to be quite standard, and which we try to adhere to when posting news and directory bullets.

EXAMPLE

How it appears

Image:Gerald Celente trends-research infowars 95x95.jpg
Directory:Best Exotic Clean Energy Technologies: Directory:Nuclear > Directory:Cold Fusion > Directory:Andrea A. Rossi Cold Fusion Generator > Gerald Celente: Cold fusion - Goldseek Radio interviewed Gerald Celente, who described the Italian cold fusion breakthrough as being the big opportunity that could turn things around in the economy by creating productive capacity -- something to build an industry around to create jobs, etc... (Directory:Cold Fusion Now January 26, 2011)

How the markup looks

Directory:Best Exotic Clean Energy Technologies: Directory:Nuclear >

Directory:Cold Fusion > Directory:Andrea A. Rossi Cold Fusion Generator >

Gerald Celente: Cold fusion "to be the greatest investment opportunity of the 21st century."]'''

Image

We use a standard size for all news and bullet images as much as possible: 95 x 95 pixels.

The image is posted to the right of the bullet.

If possible, it is good to reduce the file size of the image, so save on memory and load time.

Topic Identification

"Nuclear" is the most general directory/topical listing, so a person knows what genre the item falls under, and can click through for more information about that general subject if they are interested. This is a step that is not necessary when within a topical page, because everything on the page is of the same genre, so it is implied.

"Cold Fusion" is the more specific directory/topical listing, so a person knows what more specific genre the item falls under, and can click through for more information about that general subject if they are interested.

"Rossi" is the specific company relevant to this news item. Rather than list the full page title, we go for the most abbreviated form possible that still conveys the company: Directory:Andrea A. Rossi Cold Fusion Generator

If a topical page has several listings of a sub-genre, e.g. "Wind > Vertical Axis", then it is good to throw up a heading "Vertical Axis" on the Wind page, and post the vertical-axis-relevant items under that heading.

Title

Next comes the title "Gerald Celente: Cold fusion "to be the greatest investment opportunity of the 21st century.".

Try to keep that between 4 and 10 words only. It is hyperlinked to the destination url.

Description

Next, after " - " comes the description.

Try to keep that between 10 and 30 words. It summarizes the contents and captures the essential components for the intended audience.

A good description can often capture the essence of an article, giving a person a good thumbnail view of the article or website, even if they don't have time to click through and read the article or website.

Attribution

Then comes the source information. (Organization, location, date.) I italicize the organization name.

In this case, we have a feature page at PESWiki, so we link to it: Directory:Cold Fusion Now

Using Templates for Bullets

Note that we're using a template function now for the bullets. That way, you define the bullet once, and if there are corrections to be made, you just correct once, and all incidences of the bullet are updated.

See Help:Using Templates for Bullets for more info about how to do this.
