  • New Envion Facility Turns Plastic Waste into $10/Barrel Fuel - Washington, DC company claims it can turn plastic into an oil-like fuel for just $10 per barrel, which can be blended with other components and used as either gasoline or diesel.     Bacteria Make Oil from Biomass - A Georgia company has announced that they have devised a simple, natural way to convert anything that grows out of the Earth into oil. The inventor's formula is simple. Basically, biomass (such as grass clippings or wood chips) plus the right bacteria equals hydrocarbons, which make not just fuel but plastics and other petroleum products. (PESWiki; May 10, 2008)

Non-Oil-Based Plastic

  • Simpler, cheaper, biodegradable plastic without using fossil fuels - Polylactic acid (PLA) is growing into wide use as a replacement for petroleum-based plastics. It is made from corn-starch, or other starch-rich substances like maize, sugar or wheat, and is biodegradable. It is used as a material for compost bags, food packaging, and disposable tableware, and also for a number of biomedical applications. Now a team of researchers in South Korea has simplified the production of PLA, making the process much cheaper. (GizMag; November 22, 2009)

  • US Survey: 70+% of Americans Don't Know Plastic is Made from Oil - 40% believe plastic will biodegrade at some point. In truth, nearly 10 percent of U.S. oil consumption – approximately 2 million barrels a day – is used to make non-biodegradable plastic.   • New Bio Plastics from DuPont - More biopolymers are approaching commercial viability, adding to latex rubber and nylon-11 (made from a by-product of castor bean oil), which presently account for only a small fraction of the millions of polymer products in use today. (TreeHugger; July 6, 2006)
  • Potatoes Could be Used for Bioplastics - A report by the University of Maine's Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center says the state's potato industry could benefit by becoming a producer of bioplastics, which are made from plant starch rather than crude oil and petroleum products.
