White Whale Productions says they can replace the internal combustion engine and other power systems that require carbon based fuels and reduce the carbon footprint to zero with the "Thorium PowerPack"™ a leased device to power mobile transports (cars, and trucks, trains and boats). Eventually they believe their PowerPacks will be as common as the dry cell battery, replacing all of the existing batteries, and carbon-based fuel driven engines.

How it Works

The natural power heat of the planet is derived by the decay of the abundant crystalline element called “Thorium". Thorium is somewhat present in almost every rock and rare earth crystal, but larger high concentration deposits exist in New England, India, Brasil, Turkey, Norway, Australia, Canada and other countries. Our Powerpacks rely on a novel, clean, safe way to excite the crystals to liberate controlled heat. Powerpacks can be designed at 100KW 90% duty cycle output for the medium sized "home user" and up to 1 MegaWatt output for the larger industrial size. Re-charging systems for hybrid vehicles can be designed at about 10-20 KW.

Extremely low cost experimental demonstrators set at 1 KW continuous output should become available when production agreements can be put in place, at an estimated 35K$ per 1KW size to be used in creating pre-market sales. We are estimating that a final use cost of license is estimated at between 1/10th to 1/5th of the existing energy costs (both for electrical and fuel consumption) so as to stay within the existing consumer mindset of cost of energy. This license cost should be determined though with a proper survey based on the market itself, volume of sales, and how much the organization can maintain its exclusivity.

Small Pack

Calculations (automotive, transportation - all figures are rounded):

Assuming 14Kw per hour consumption for typical hybrid car going 60 mph, traveling 4 hours per day

Then @ 4 hours per day going 60 mph, the total miles traveled is 240 miles.

The total fuel consumed is 71.942 grams per year / 365 days = 0.1971 grams per day.

@ 60 mph, usage is 0.1971 grams per day / 240 miles = 0.00082125 grams of fuel consumed per mile

Verifying, the cost per mile is 0.00082125 grams x $26 per gram = $0.0213525 per mile

The total cost then per day for fuel is 0.1917 grams per day x $26 per gram = $4.98 expense then, (Verifying, where a total fuel expense of $4.98 gives one 240 miles travelable in a day).

Verifying, $4.98 per day x 365 = $1817.7 cost of fuel per year. A $1817.7 cost of fuel per year x 13.9 years = $25,266.03 (or $26,000 rounded)

A 1 (one) year sized fuel module then at the above rate allows for a total of about 87,600 miles travel.

Verify, at a cost of $26 per gram, 71.942 grams total for a year’s cost is: $1870.5 rounded

Large Pack

Based on 284,000,000 watts (284 megawatts) for 1Kg fuel (2.2 pounds) –Large fuel pack size

Assumptive calculations (automotive, transportation - Note - all values are rounded off)

14Kw per hour re-charge + loads, equals consumption for typical hybrid car going 60 mph

284,000,000 total watts / 14,000 watts load per hour = 20,286 hours of running time (of load watt-hours available for 1Kg of fuel)

Running @ 4 hours per day at 60 mph, the total miles traveled per day are 240 miles.

Running @ 4 hours a day @ 14Kw per hour consumed, the 1Kg fuel lifetime expectancy is 5072 days.

2.2 pounds fuel (1Kg) gives 5072 days / 365 (days in a year) = 13.9 years for a “fill-up"

The yearly consumption of fuel: 1000 g fuel / 13.9 tot. years = 71.942 g per year.

Using 60 mph for 20,286 watt-hours = 1,217,160 miles traveled over the fuel pack’s cycle.

Miles traveled per year then is 1,217,160 total cycle / 13.9 tot. years = 87,565.5 miles per year.

Verifying, 240 miles per day x 365 days = 87,600 miles (rounded up) per year

Energy production data (Note – our fuel doesn’t “go bad" over its life cycle expectancy)

About 250 Kw of heat per gram of fuel is the yield (allowing for some losses).

85,000,000 watts (85 megawatts) is available for 300 grams of fuel

284,000,000 watts (284 megawatts) for 1Kg fuel (2.2 pounds) – Large fuel pack size

Verifying, where 85,000,000 / 300 = 283,333 watts per gram

Maximum excitation is 3x10e13 neutrons per second rate for a fully ON “hot" rate

Let's do some computations to see what it could be like using an alternative fuel and power source - Having an available power figure of 284,000,000 watts (that's 284 megawatts!) available by using (1000 grams) of the "Thorium PowerPack"™ fuel for a total fuel cost of $26,000 what then are total amount of years available at a constant energy consumption rate of 10,181 Kw hours consumed over the year? It comes to about 27.9 years of use is possible from the fuel. This is computed by taking 284,000,000 watts and dividing that by the amount of 10,181,000 watts consumed over a year. A cost per Kw hour using our large 1000 gram Powerpack comes to $0.1063 cents per Kw hour. That’s a $931.188 per year fuel cost.

We'd save the consumer not adding in the inflation rate, over 27.9 years $9506.24 ($35506.24 minus $26,000) over the best conventional centralized power energy costs. Consider adding in the yearly inflation rate for the costs of goods purchased running about 3%. However the inflation rates in the 60's/70's peaked at 10%, so it's not just a 3% normal minimum inflation rate is going to be predictable. Furthermore the cost of fuels over the last 10 years has jumped about 10% per month depending on where in the world one is. 100% hike in a year? Can one afford 20$ a gallon gasoline in 10 years, yet alone 30? More than likely we'd have saved the consumer in 30 years, about 10X the amount, or close to $95,000 in fuel costs alone.

Look at these consumer pluses in using our "Thorium PowerPack"™ systems:

: Advantages in that there is no centralized power grid that can fail during a "storm". Self contained.

: Zero carbon footprint, no green house gases, no water vapor emitted. The world is kept cleaner.

: Fuel doesn’t go bad over time and no large underground tanks required for fuel stores.

: One can buy in bulk for years supplies.

: No Centralized distribution grid needed cutting down energy transportation costs.

: The price of the PowerPack fuel is fixed at the time of install and doesn't increase cost over time.

: Imagine buying a home where the fuel is already prepaid with No more fuel worries !

The cost of energy has been demonstrated to be going up continually with hydrocarbon, or coal fired fuels as supplied by the Utility Companies. It is ludicrous to continue to use coal, natural gas or oil as a fuel. Hydrogen, the so-called "fuel of the future" has dangerous drawbacks, and the creation of the Hydrogen itself consumes massive amounts of energy and creates toxic pollution. Any centralized energy distribution system for supplying energy to a town, a city or a country is problematic, expensive and dangerous.

These systems ARE regulated by FDA, NRC and EPA, and require a license be obtained before the sales and use of such both from me and the various local state and federal governmental agencies. Various districts, states, commonwealths or countries have their own particular export/import requirements, and such will have to be complied with before any orders are filled. No appreciable radioactivity leaves an interlocked sealed system, so class-1a registration appears proper (consistent with FDA registration of contained laser emission systems). Dual use agreements must be approved and in-place before any consideration of export will be allowed. There will be NO export of strategic technology under any circumstances.

One Gram of Thorium used in the "Thorium PowerPack"™ designed by Bob shows as much as 284,000 watts of power. One gram of fuel costs $26. Configured into a "Hybrid" style automobile such as a Prius configuration, that one gram of fuel would allow for 1200 miles of driving. An average driver covering 40 miles a day would then have about month's worth of drive available for that very low cost - Advantages: Zero Pollutants, zero carbon footprint exists, and zero waste exists.

Compared with $3.50 per gallon of gasoline with a 30 mpg fuel efficiency vehicle, 40 gallons of fuel would be consumed costing $140. One gallon of gasoline burned puts out an ugly carbon pollutant weighing 19.654 pounds (carbon dioxide). The other green house gas, water vapor, is put out at 8 pounds of water vapor for a gallon of gasoline burned. These same 1200 miles driven in one vehicle, then used 40 gallons of gasoline and created 786 pounds of carbon dioxide and 320 pounds of water vapor pollution, with a cost of a minimum of $114 more than the alternative. The damage to the environment takes hundreds of years, if at all, to recover. Water vapor in the atmosphere is what is responsible for about 90% of the earth's green house effect.

Our "Thorium PowerPack"™ is an obvious choice for this method of powering mobile transports (cars, and trucks, trains and boats). Eventually we believe our PowerPacks will be as common as the dry cell battery, replacing all of the existing batteries, and carbon based fuel driven engines.

As with any technology we develop, this technology is licensed, not sold:

: Pollution (carbon footprint) - none

: Safety - HIGH, sealed and contained with appropriate interlocks

: Consumables - recycle thorium powerpak and refuel every 10 years of continuous use (performed by a registered licensed service organization).

: Maintenance is minimal (change the refrigerant, oil, lubricate the bearings, verify compliance) - the system self-recalibrates as needed. High quality ceramic and magnetic bearings are used throughout for extremely long life and reliability. Self-check and calibration data is stored in nonvolatile memory to allow for quick and easy readout of performance and diagnostics.

: Warranty is to be a limited warranty of about 9 years from date of install on parts and labor, with extended warranties available.

Present Status

On May 14, 2008, Bob Dratch wrote to Sterling D. Allan:

I haven't done anything with the thorium system since the late 90's. The difficulty is getting Nuclear Regulatory Commission licenses, and then a containment facility to work with it safely to package it. At that point it would be considered a clean switchable heat generator, basically pulse modulated for the desired power output.

The novelty comes in the neutron generator and the way the thorium is excited.

We're nowhere near production due to the NRC licensing issues and building a facility to work with it. There isn't anything insurmountable as far as building or obtaining necessary materials. This is about as green as it gets for nuclear, with a very high thermal yield output. I put together a small research budget to build 4 test modules. That's about it.

When I said the difficulty is getting the Nuclear Regulatory Commission licenses, there is no difficulty getting such from the commission, MY DIFFICULTY is paying for them - I don't have 5600$ per year to just toss into fees.

As soon as we setup a development program, (which will house research and production), filings and other NRC compliance will be handled out of the program budgets. To do filings now would be premature and a waste of resources.

Setting up a design facility with proper containment, security and control/monitoring runs about 750K$ (US) initially and then about 100K$ (US) per year. Materials costs are relatively minor, which makes this type of energy production concept I feel quite appropriate. If one considers the cost to drill a hole for oil, again, it's ludicrous seeing the fantastic amounts of funds going into "old energy" exploration compared to green solutions.

NDA and Trade Secret status currently, patents to be filed globally and locally as req'd.
