Biomass to Electricity and Fuel via Plasma

Imagine a gasoline and diesel source that is CO2 neutral, sulfur-free, derived from renewable sources, superior in its power performance to fossil-based fuels, and costs less than 1/7 of fossil-based fuels.

That is what W2Energy of Toronto claims to be developing. Eventually they envision this technology product completely replacing fossil fuels.

There have been some politics of science over the intellectual property, which have set back the progress this company had been making.

Interview

Download (13 Mb mp3) - On Oct. 8, 2007, Congress:Founder:Sterling D. Allan conducted a live, 1-hour interview with Mike McLaren of W2Energy as part of the Free Energy Now radio series.

Overview

The following is a synopsis of the below-mentioned There was an error working with the wiki: Code[1].

W2Energy has a patented biomass plasma reactor for "non-thermal plasma" assisted conversion of biomass to syngas and high quality liquid fuel -- either diesel or gasoline. The "non-thermal plasma" reaction has to do with exciting the electrons, and doesn't run nearly as hot as regular plasma arc reactions. It's temperature range is between 700 and 1000 degrees F, whereas regular plasma reactions start at 3000 degrees F.

The W2Energy process can use any pure hydrocarbon biomass feedstock, such as sewage, peat or algae. The ideal feedstock has a high carbon and low moisture content. In the case of algae, because it is a CO2 scavenger, the CO2 released from burning the resulting fuel is a net zero relationship -- as much CO2 is released in burning the fuel is also captured by the algae that was put into the feedstock. The company has a policy to not use food commodities as their feedstock.

Rather than just annihilate the biomass molecules in the feedstock the W2Energy plasma approach uses the biomass as fuel in the process of making fuel. It harnesses the chemical energy of the biomass.

The non-thermal plasma processed developed by W2Energy can use straight atmosphere and does not require specialized gasses such as O2 and it operates at atmospheric pressure, not requiring a vacuum as most other plasma processes do. "Simplicity" has been the prime objective of the company.

The process is also relatively safe. The system would shut down in an accident or natural disaster.

Maintenance is relatively low. They plan one service work-over for two weeks every year, in addition to routine filter and catalyst replacements.

W2Energy also has developed a patented rotary engine / positive displacement pump energy system, which is a flexible fuel engine. They designed it to burn the syngas for the production of electricity in the W2Energy systems, but it has much wider potential application, including the transportation and utility industries. In a 10,000 barrel/day plant, the plasma machine will require 4 megawatts of electricity to run, while producing 100 megawatts. And this is just from the syngas. The liquid fuel is the main product.

The company has completed its benchtop testing phase and is building its first pilot plant, which will produce 100 barrels per day, expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2008. After running that plant for about six months, they will proceed with a 1,000 barrels/day plant. The eventual commercial plant is expected to produce 10,000 barrels/day. Such a plant would cost $80 - 100 million to build.

Cost

The W2Energy process can produce diesel or gasoline at a cost of around 14-15 cents per gallon, compared to $1.00/gallon for fossil-based fuels.

The W2Energy process is 1/10 the capital and operating costs of steam reformation.
