A giant particle accelerator near Geneva at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) -- built over the past 14 years, with a 17-mile circumference, at a cost of $8 billion -- is expected to begin experimental runs in the summer of 2008.

The objective is to explore phenomenon thought to be involved in the origins of the universe.

A lawsuit filed in U.S. federal court during last week of March alleges that the experiment could open up a black hole that instantly consumes the entire planet, and possibly much more. "Compression of the two atoms colliding together at nearly light speed will cause an irreversible implosion, forming a miniature version of a giant black hole."

Latest Developments

CERN's big collider now in action - On Wednesday morning, the first particle beam was successfully sent around the full circuit of the Large Hadron Collider at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, known as CERN. (CNet News Sept 10, 2008)

Large Hadron Collider: The wait is over - At 27 Kilometeres long, it is the largest machine in the world. It will accelerate counterrotating beams of protons to within a whisker of the speed of light and smash them head-on 600 million times a second. It will be operational soon. CERN Experiment May Violate NEPA, Destroy Universe -The U.S. Energy Department, the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, the National Science Foundation and CERN as listed as defendants in the lawsuit, which reads, in part, "compression of the two atoms colliding together at nearly light speed will cause an irreversible implosion, forming a miniature version of a giant black hole." (Environwonk March 29, 2008)

Asking a Judge to Save the World, and Maybe a Whole Lot More - The world’s physicists have spent 14 years and $8 billion building the Large Hadron Collider, in which the colliding protons will recreate energies and conditions last seen a trillionth of a second after the Big Bang. Researchers will sift the debris from these primordial recreations for clues to the nature of mass and new forces and symmetries of nature. Only the experimentation may be stopped.
