The Energy Ball designed and built by Home Energy, breaks from most wind turbine design by using a spherical structure. They say that by using such a design, significantly higher aerodynamic efficiency can be achieved (40% better efficiency), as compared to traditional designs.

The Energy Ball's design constricts the wind, thereby causing the pressure to drop inside the ball. This sucks in air flowing around the ball and helps turn the rotor blades.

Because of this sucking action, Venturi-based turbines use more of the wind — and can therefore be 40 percent more efficient — than a propeller-style turbine of the same diameter, according to research by Technical University of Delft in Holland.

Two models are available, the 0.5 kW Energy Ball V100 with a diameter of 110cm (43"), and the 2.5 kW Energy Ball V200 with a diameter of 198cm (78"). Home Energy claims that the V200 can provide up to 50% of a typical home’s electrical needs, while the V100 should be seen as a supplement to other energy sources. Both can produce power starting at wind speeds of 3 meters/second, and max out in wind speeds of 40 m/s.

This beautiful and low-noise turbine is being characterized by the six curved rotor blades which are attached to the rotor hub with both ends. When the Energy Ball® rotor turns it resembles a sphere, and as a distinct feature the wind blows parallel to the rotor hub through the rotor. This wind flow direction (flow pattern) forms a key contrast with classic sphere shaped Darrieus turbines, whereby the wind hits the blades perpendicular to the rotor shaft or rotor hub.

Due to the unusual and exceptional aerodynamics characteristics of the Energy Ball®, it creates a wind flow pattern that converges first and is then accelerated through the rotor, resembling the rapids in a river (the so-called Venturi effect). This translates into a higher aerodynamic efficiency compared to conventional wind turbine designs.

The Energy Ball® starts producing electric energy as from very low wind speeds and has therefore a very low standstill time. The unique design makes that an electricity producing Energy Ball® is virtually transparent.

The V100 has a list price of just under SKr 30,000 ($4,600) the V200 sells for about SKr 53,000 ($8,100). Both prices are just for the turbine, inverter and cabling.
