U.S. company with R&D lab in Australia claims to have an engine that runs only on permanent magnets, with no other input except a starter aparatus that is powered by a battery and then disconnected. October 2003 TV footage shows demo prototype in action. Company claims to be building a prototype that can be fitted to an automobile.

: "Cycclone Magnetic Engines (CME) [...] bases their concept on using permanent magnets in a configuration that supplies mechanical power on demand. To offer a commercially-viable alternative to the ubiquitous internal combustion engine, a magnetic technology must imitate the manner and principles under which the internal combustion engines operate. That is, to accelerate, decelerate, maintain a specific number of revolutions per minute while responding to an increase or decrease in load, and to have the ability to be operated by humans in a foolproof fashion. CME believes that it is able to meet these criteria by concentrating development on the control and configuration of the applied magnets."

2005 Cycclone Magnetic Engines increase development work on the engine and aim for the release of the next model, the C3X2, and fitment to a vehicle as soon as possible.
September 2004 Cycclone visits magnet manufacturer in the US, and work on the new magnets begins.
29 October 2003 Cycclone Magnetic Engines announced the successful running of the C3X model. A Channel 9 news crew records this achievement.

October/November 2002 Technical Development Centre opened, work begins on the C3X engine assembly.
Not a lot of information is given on the Cycclone website as to how the engine functions.
According to the March 2005 newsletter, Nugent says he follows "the concept of using the stored energy in the magnets to produce a mechanical result." An inquiry to Cycclone asking for the data on "energy required to magnetize the magnets versus energy produced by the device" is in process of being answered. The correspondence includes a question about whether or not the engine is an "all magnet" engine, with no electromagnetic components, or if there were an electromagnetic component as well. It is clear that they use some kind of a starting device which has electrical input. It appears that the engine itself is an all-magnet configuration. : "The design of the C3X that you have seen running on the television and internet was specifically built so that it can be extended or shortened and has removable end plates so that we can access the internal workings from both ends. Another unique feature of the C3X is that the magnets are assembled in a cartridge style so that they can be changed similar to the way that you would change a cylinder head or other serviceable component. This will give us the ability to continually up-grade the magnets in service as new processes come on line."
Newsletter aslo tells history of problems with magnets, and how those have been addressed, as well as what additional improvements are envisioned.
: "The concept behind CME is to replace the liquid fuel power stroke of two revolutions with a load line (permeance coefficient, Pc) power pulse in four to eight deliveries per revolution depending on the size and power requirement. This will equate to four power strokes per revolution in a four cycle configuration eliminating the wasted energy of one and a half rotations of the four stroke engine. Further, the power consuming components of the reciprocating engine such as the camshaft, valve train, oil pump, water pump, fan, and fuel pump in diesel engines will further advantage the CME as they will not be required." Modern magnet materials such as the Rare Earth types are extremely powerful, and when in repulsion they can behave as projectiles if adhesives were to break down. Court of Appeal dismisses appeal in relation to perpetual motion machine - The Queensland Court of Appeal has dismissed an appeal by Cycclone Magnetic Engines Inc (CME) and its chairman Micheal Peter Nugent, 47, of the Gold Coast. Mr Nugent and CME appealed against findings made by the Queensland Supreme Court that they had engaged in misleading or deceptive conduct, or conduct that was likely to mislead or deceive by making representations in a business plan for a 'perpetual motion machine', without reasonable grounds to do so. Supreme Court issues final orders on Cycclone Magnetic Engines (ruling) - The Supreme Court of Queensland has made final orders in relation to unlawful conduct by Cycclone Magnetic Engines Inc (CME) and its chairman Micheal (sic) Peter Nugent of the Gold Coast. US-based CME claimed it had developed an engine that produced power through the use of magnets and required no fuel. The Court found that the engine could not work. (ASIC.org Aug. 4, 2009)
