Blue Energy is the leading tidal energy company, now in process of putting its first commercial installation in place. They've had the engineering in place for ten years. Now they have university data (University of British Columbia) to further back the prototype data they have collected.

The vertical axis turbine technology, which has been around since the 1920's, but held back for political reasons, and refined recently by individuals from the aerospace industry, has the potential for 2 cents/kW-h when installed on a 2 to 2,000 MW tidal fence scale. The "tidal fence" design by Blue Energy doubles as a roadway or land bridge, providing that added revenue source. In the vertical axis scenario, the generators can be situated above water in climate control rooms, reducing environmental degradation.

New Energy Congress founding member, Patrick Bailey, founder of the Institute for New Energy (INE), after reviewing the top 100 energy technologies in 1999, named Blue Energy Number One in "Commercial Readiness." "And it still is," he said on Sept. 23, 2006 at the Conference on Future Energy.

Blue Energy's tidal concept is the only demonstrated renewable energy technology to be recognized as being "aluminum-smelter"-capable (2 cents/kw-h possible).

Governments and Utilities have been the primary logjam in implementing this technology -- something that public outcry can help reverse.

SPECIAL BULLETIN: Blue Energy tidal = wave of the future - Special message sent by Sterling Allan after interviewing martin Burger.

Tide Energy Feasibility

60% of the World's human population resides near coastal areas.

Tidal energy is around 200x more energy dense than wind or solar.

14 to 15 knots water speed found in some tides is comparable to 700 km/h wind speed in its energy.

Water (tide) is non-compactable, in contrast to air (wind), which is compactable making tidal energy much more predictable in terms of scalability.

Tide phases are very predictable, unlike solar and wind phases, which only have "statistical probability", not actual probability.

Two tidal stations just 20 kilometers apart could supplement one another so that at least one is always running.

In the event of a 100-year hurricane, the misplaced portions of a tidal fence would merely need to be moved back into place.

No fish mortality has yet been discovered with any of the Blue Energy prototypes.

Ship traffic can be accommodated in a tidal fence via a raising of the roadway above, and moving of the water-block below.

Brief History

George Darius invented the horizontal axis tidal turbine design in the 1920's. This formed the basis of what has been further refined by Blue Energy aerospace engineers, and should have been implemented.

President John F. Kennedy enacted legislation to get tidal energy implemented. The Passamaquoddy Tidal Power Project was scrapped after his death.

Present Status

As of Oct. 7, 2006 . . .

After many years of designing turbines and building prototypes to test, the company is now beginning commercial installations, beginning on the West coast of British Columbia, and possibly Alaska. Pending final funding, the company has a shortlist of possible installation sites. These installations entail two 250kW counter-rotating turbines. This first instillation is expected to be completed in 20 months. This installation is expected to produce energy at 6 - 9 cents per kW-hour.

The company is also awaiting the full capitalization of $7 million required for this first installation.

One of their designs entails a bridge that doubles as a tidal dam. Scotland, an area with high tidal flow (e.g. 14 to 15 knots) and with a need for inter-island transportation, is likely to host the first such installation. This tidal generation deployment, outputting 5 to 10 Megawatts, is projected to result in energy generation at a cost of as low as two cents per kilowatt-hour, which is well below any conventional energy generation pricing.

Martin Burger calls it "Fisher Price engineering with the benefit of space age tecnology."
