'Resistor Specifics for John Bedini's "Directory:Bedini SG" Replication'

Changing low resistance and changes the speed of rotation and amps in/out. Changing high resistance changes the solid state (no rotation) resonance and amps in/out.

From 47 ohms and lower, to 20k ohms and higher. There is a wide range of function in between.

Changing the Resistance

Changing the resistance in the circuit might be considered the "volume/speed" control for the unit. You will want to be able to modify the resistance on your unit, both to get operation in the first place, as well as to modify operation in order to find optimums.

You will want to protect your system from going to zero resistance, so be sure to have at least one permanent resistor in line with any potentiometer you use.

To begin, we recommend one hard 47 ohms resistor in series with a 10k potentiometer. That should give you a wide range to find most effects. Later, you may wish to explore lower and higher resistances.

Using a 6V, 4.2Ah/20h Panasonic battery, with a coil of 425 turns, 3" lengths spool, the rest as defined in the instructions for this project, the following parameters have been observed:

Varying speeds of wheel rotation are found at lower resistances (between 40 and 1000 ohms using a ...). Lower ohms results in faster rotation until the friction of rotation overcomes further acceleration.

Solid state (no moving parts) resonance is achieved starting at around 2k ohms, with audible frequency from between around 2.2k and 5k ohms. Increasing resistance increases pitch from about E above middle C to an octave above that.

Charging has been observed with as high as 20k ohms.

Note that in some regions, the solid state resonance needs to be "kick started" by passing the magnets over the coil. In other regions, the only way to get to a certain resonance is to start lower or higher and then adjust the potentiometer down or up to that region. The lower/higher resonances serves to "kick start" the otherwise non-responsive region.
