Dr. Andrew A. "Andy" Frank is an electrical engineer who began his career in the aerospace industry working on projects such as the Apollo spacecraft and Minuteman missile. Since 1971 he has worked on engineering of electric vehicles as a Professor at University of Wisconsin, Madison and at University of California, Davis. The prototype vehicles, research publications and patents produced in this work have earned Andy recognition as the father of the modern plugin hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV).

NOVA | Car of the Future | A Plug-In Solution | PBS 22april2008 The 'Car Talk' brothers, Tom and Ray Magliozzi, visit the University of California at Davis lab of Dr. Andrew "Andy" Frank, inventor of the plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV), to learn more about one of the possible ways we can transition our transportation system away from dependence upon petroleum fuels. Gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles consume 30% less gasoline and emit 30% less carbon pollution than traditional gasoline-powered vehicles of the same size and performance. Andy and his students are building PHEVs that can recharge their batteries from the electrical grid, hopefully producing an energy revolution. "This kind of car can transition us off of oil and on to electricity," said Frank. Their recent prototype PHEV has an all-electric range of 60 miles which is sufficient for the daily driving needs of most people. Whenever longer distance travel is needed the PHEV has a gas tank that holds enough fuel to travel 600 miles. PHEVs fueled from today's electrical grid instead of gasoline would reduce greenhouse gas pollution by 40%. Further reductions in pollution are possible in the future if we transition towards electrical generation from clean, renewable sources of energy such as wind or solar.
