Butanol

Directory:Butanol - Butanol is compatible with gasoline. It uses the same air/fuel mixture and has the same energy content. It can be mixed with gasoline in any ratio in unmodified engines. Butanol can be produced at an estimated cost of 85 cents per gallon, and is a direct replacement for gasoline.

Ethanol

Directory:Ethanol - For modified gasoline engines (if over 30-50% ethanol mix). Ethanol requires a richer air/fuel mix than does gasoline (9-to-1 as opposed to 15-to-1)(timing change, usually done easily with the car's fuel monitoring system). Ethanol is rated at 105 octane. These factors may result in lower mileage using ethanol blended gasoline.Ethanol is corrosive to engine and fuel line parts only in pre-1984 vehicles. Consumer Reports says mileage takes a hit with ethanol blend - The consumer publication ran tests on the 2007 Chevy Tahoe flexible-fuel vehicle, and found that the SUV's mileage dropped 27% from 14 mpg to 10 mpg on E85. The decline could be expected because ethanol has a lower energy content than gasoline. With E85 costing an average of $2.91 in August, the fuel-economy penalty means drivers are essentially paying almost $4 for the equivalent of a gallon of gasoline. (ConsumerReports October, 2006)

The Ammonia Economy - Ammonia can be doped by environmentally friendly chemical additives, and thus be compatible in high-speed engines. Ammonia is already compatible in other energy devices, such as low-speed engines and fuel cells. It is an abundantly produced chemical used in industry and agriculture. Peat grows as new fuel source - Researchers have identified a cheaper and more Earth-friendly fuel source: peat, that half-rotted vegetation that covers a considerable chunk of Michigan. They are working to develop what they call "pethanol" to run small, fuel-cell-powered vehicles. Peat forms naturally, is cheap to harvest and requires no fertilization. Airlines push for homegrown jet fuel - The airline industry is aggressively pushing for homegrown alternatives to petroleum-based jet fuel. A coalition that includes the Federal Aviation Administration, airline, manufacturing and airport associations wants standards for a 50 percent synthetic jet fuel approved by the end of 2008. Following hydrothermal treatment, the upgraded Low Rank Coal is mixed with water to make Low-Rank Coal-Water Fuel (Green Fuel). This stable liquid fuel is non-hazardous and can use existing oil infrastructure for handling, storage and transportation.

Liquid coal fuel for $15 a barrel - Silverado Green Fuel can produce a liquid fuel for industrial boilers for $15 a barrel, and barrels of "oil" for car fuel that will cost about $25 a barrel, half of what conventional oil costs today.
